Share your knowledge on these two classic MPCs

whatup yall, I just got a new inverter and I'm about to change that sucker out. I did some searching and read up on this and that, but there weren't really any pictures showing where the inverter is in the 3K..

if you have done this service and took pictures, post them up! or if you've done it and have some advice or tips, post it up!

or if you have the 3K service manual, that would be dope as well. I'm good on the soldering and have a multimeter for testing voltages and all that...

If you open the MPC, and you're looking from the front of the unit, the power supply boards are located in the right back corner.

Remove the 4 screws from the back and take the upper power supply board (and heat sink) out. The connectors are not hard to figure out, but you can mark them anyway just to help remember which way and where they go.

Next, remove the lower inverter board. Same deal with those cables.

As someone pointed out, if you have a replacement Nichia inverter, just unsolder the old and solder in the new. Hopefully you have a decent iron with sufficient power to get the legs unsoldered since there's a groundplane on one of the pins.

If you don't have an exact match, you need to know the orientation of the pins, this may help:

**FROM THE BOTTOM**, Nichia transformer oriented so you are looking at the pins and there are 2 pins across the top and one on the bottom (the notched corner is in the upper right) -- the bottom pin (pin 3) is the output which drives the backlight (you can see the trace connecting to the jack for the backlight). The top pins (left to right) - pin 2 (left pin) is ground. You should see on the circuit board a large groundplane. pin 1 (right) is the +5 input. You should see that pin connected to the capacitor which is in turn connected to the +5v input connector.

Orient your new transformer so those pins match.

Thanks for the information guys. I don't have the same type inverter. The one I got is a little black one, I ordered from an electronics site that someone linked in a previous post. So I'm probably going to have to glue the small black inverter I got somewhere in the MPC where there is room and just run some wires from the inverter to the proper places where the original inverter was? This is going to be more work than I anticipated :cry: but I guess I don't have much else to do

*I haven't yet taken out the inverter...FYI, I really don't know what I'm looking at yet


if I'm going to glue the new inverter and run wires from it to the part of the board where the old one connected, what kind/gauge of wire should I use? I mentioned this to my pops who is pretty handy with electronics and he asked what kind of wire I should use, so I'm gonna forward that one to yall!

also if I won't need wire and it will fit in with a little mashing, let me know 8)

well, I'm def. going to need to solder a wire to each end of the new inverter and lace those to the spots where the old inverter connected to the board...

what gauge/type of wire should I use and where could I source it? ...thanks
