60 II Memory Expansion

wondering if anyone has purchased one of these kits recently. the links for it in the sticky are somewhat dated:

- ramona link is dead
- masterbits requires a bank transfer (would like to avoid that if possible)
- forat is only doing the service, not selling do-it-yourself kits
- the $20 hack i've seen online looks a little sketchy
- syntaur not carrying any more

any help would be appreciated.

"Thank you for your interest in Sound Logic. Unfortunately we are no longer able to make these because we lost all of the parts and documentation in the 2007 California wildfires. We're up and running in our new facilities, but we can no longer make some of the proprietary upgrades we used to make. Let us know if we can be of help in some other way."

thanks man... yeah, vst doesn't have the actual upgade but they might be willing to do the hack for me... the problem is that i live in seoul. shipping nightmare. :0

The "$20 hack" is the same as what Forat or VST will install for you. If you can use a soldering iron, this shouldn't be too difficult. Most of the issues with this modification arise from either poor soldering or getting the wrong RAM.

I got mine from Forat. Worth every penny.

Masterbits accepts payment via PAYPAL. ( It says this on their website )

Payment funding source must be your primary linked bank account and not a credit card.

I have purchased items from them in the past via Paypal.

mpchunter... can't say i'm handy with a soldering iron but i am going to give it a go this weekend... with the help of a friend who has used one before. not doing the memory though... gonna try to fix the soft key 1 button, maybe swap it with the help button. not sure if that's even possible. was told in the forum it is.

thanks rohan... unfortunately, at the moment, paypal is linked to my amex... i closed my account back home before coming back to korea last summer, thinking i could link paypal to my korean bank account, which would have been much more convenient. come to find out, they don't allow it. accounts started with a US bank, have to remain that way. i know, its something i should have found out beforehand.

I recently bought two brand new memory expansions from MUTEC Germany.

They were 39€ each only, which is about 55US $ each, but I don't know if
they ship worldwide.

I was also told that this was a special price. The contact person was very
friendly! Unfortunately, the expansions aren't produced any more.

I bought an MPC60 MK1 with Linn OS 3.1, but it only had the base memory. I just did the $20 memory expansion hack yesterday and tested it briefly, so far it is working fine. I do not hear any clipping or abnormal sounds when playing back samples as stated by some members with this hack installed on their mpc. I tried finding an original expasion board but had no luck, so I decided to do the hack. It took me around 3 hours, but it was really rewarding when I power it up and went the the sounds/sample menu and turned the sampling time upto 26 seconds.

yeah, i'm leaning towards doing this... my soldering skills, or lack thereof, are keeping me from rushing right into it. mpchunter made a great suggestion in doing a little practice beforehand.

on the proper expansion front, i received an email from the people at masterbits... out of stock. might make it official that those things are no longer available, new. it's a shame, too... i've heard its very easy to install them if you can find one.

curious rtech... where'd you find the parts for your expansion hack? mouser?

I got them from a company called Jameco at the following page:

I followed the instructions listed on the following page:

The only thing that I did not do was buy the sockets from Jameco as the above page suggested. I lucked out because my MPC60 MKI already had sockets. I just removed the original memory chips and then soldered the new ones on top. Then I took them and inserted them into the sockets. I don't know if the MK2 has the memory chips soldered onto the voice board or attached by sockets. If you have the sockets already installed it should be much easier.

Just like you, I looked everywhere for the original style memory but came up short. I also emailed that German company and got a reply to my email a week later with an out of stock message. I finally gave up and decided to do it on my own. I called VST in pasadena, Cali and spoke to Dave and he told me that they would do it but the parts were hard to find. After I told him that I had found them in Jameco he told me to buy the fastest memory I could get.I He suggested either 70ns or 60ns, but Jameco only had the 80ns and 70ns. I purchased the 70ns memory chips for $1.55 each. This are the chips I bought:
