Did the mpc 60 mk1 have the highest manufacturing cost?

is it fair to say the mpc 60 had the highest manufacturing cost

i.e it cost akai more money to make the akai mpc 60 mk1 then any other mpc?


if it did would this mean that the mpc 60 has the most expensive components , highest build quality ?

I would say the 4000 had the highest build cost.

I wuld say either 60 or 3K. But I bet 60 'cos it was a new, revolutionary idea at its time so much more effort was put than all its little brothers.. it's easier to duplicate the formula isn't it

Logically it should be the MPC60 Mk1. I'm only speculating now, but if you take a look inside the machine, technically it's a machine made up of a mixture of period-PC (and the likes that were competing against IBM standard at the time) hardware and more or less custom-made hardware. Around 1988, computer hardware was expensive compared to what we're used to today, to put it mildly. Add to this a lot of special stuff for the 60 like sound board, OS chips etc, produced just for this machine in very small series...

I don't think another later MPC was ever as expensive to build. Simply because the MPC60 came when it did, just before the start of a neverending trend of cheaper computer hardware.

1988 $3200 has more purchasing power than any of those, so the MPC 60 was the most expensive to manufacture.

I remember DJ Shadow getting a 60 from GC for list and it was 2800 or so?

back in the 80's, ram wasn't as cheap as it became later on. Just look at computers of that era... they were barely running on more ram then the 60 used for sample time alone... and to upgrade costed a fortune.
