SCSI....how important ???

Hey dudes, this is more curiosty then anything. I recently moved to australia and have managed to find an MPC 60, with no SCSI installed, which doesnt really bother me....But how important do you guys find it in your day to day use of the mpc??

Maybe im just trying to make myself feel better by not having one!! haha

You can do without it but it does help your work flow of loading/saving your projects/samples quickly.
Hell... you are now a proud owner of a MPC-60!!! Who cares about SCSI?

i agree, if the price tag is right (meaning about 200+ less than a 60 with SCSI) its absolutly fine

i would like Scsi on mine, but finaly reciving my USB Floppy drive soon so i can archive stuff on the computer...

thats absoultly ine with me over paying 300 bucks for Scsi extra.

and yes pick it up! i started with 1k about a year ago... i didnt really get on the boat with that one, have a 60 since 2 weeks or so and i am LOVING it!!!!

not only the sound and Sequencer but also the more simple workflow is an advantge.

but get the 3.10 OS

Notice that if you're planning to use that USB drive with WIN XP, Omniflop won't work with it. Or are you going to use any other PC software to read the 60 floppy format or a MAC system instead of XP?

I have used a couple different 60's for along time. Its my fav piece of gear, but not once had one w/ SCSI. Memory and 3.10 OS are much more important to me. The prices for the SCSi and mpc60's with them are just so pricey. I have never justified the purchase. That still doesn't mean I don't want it though. haha. One Day hopefully.

and yes OS is the most important, than Ram i agree

max memory for 60 = 1.5 MB

ds/dd floppy = 800MB


the most floppies you will ever need, to save a beat, are two.


if you are just saving sequences. then you can fit loads on just one floppy.

I have used the 60 for many years without scsi, it does not slow me down

It helps a LOT, in my opinion. I've used the machine both with and without SCSI. For sure it was ok without it, but now once I've gotten used to it would never be without it, it would be the first thing to get if I were to start over again with a "blank" 60. Loading and saving big kits is so extremely quick (even from zip disks) compared to floppys. No more spanning over two disks, and backup of files "just in case" is now taken care of easily.

All in all, the marion SCSI-kit makes me feel better, I guess it won't neccesarily make me produce better music though. But perhaps it does.

Don't have it in mine but need to get it for various reasons. ( most of them obvious )

I think full memory for sampling is a better option to have first time around.

I know plenty of folk with an MPC3000 who have never connected a SCSI device to it.

Same with the MPC60.

Many great tunes.

Only the floppy drive.

Having said that.

MPC60+SCSI == Speed of work flow.

Just remember. One day the SCSI board will no longer be available.

if you have the budget, get a memory card reader

I'm a bit annoyed at the maximum-number-of-files-limitation though.. it seems you cannot save more than 250 (or 300, or whatever the number was) files onto a specific partition.. once that number is reached you simply can't save any more to that partition, even if there's actually space left (It's not that I just think it's a bad thing, I actually reached the maximum number in one of my hihat-partitions yesterday..)

Which leads to another thing which bugs me.. I can't for the life of me realise why the file-loading dialog don't use the whole display. You simply can't get a good overview of what's on a partition. You can only see one file at a time, when it would have been perfectly possible to show a short list of three or four on top of each other with a scroll down to see the next in list.. because of this I don't want several hundred files on a specific partition anyway, so I guess complaint #1 isn't really that relevant...
