Tried to switch the backlight foil for my 3000....

And it still doesnt light up? I know i soldered it correctly.. Do I need to replace the whole screen?

Have you pressed the contrast knob in to turn on the backlight? You don't need to press the button hard, just enough until it clicks.

Do you know if the inverter is getting power? If you have a multimeter, take a reading at the backlight foil to see what the voltage is.

yeah i pressed the button... still doesnt work... I put the backlight that wasnt working from my 3000 into my s3000xl and the backlight actually worked.. so it has to be something else with my mpc 3000 other than the backlight...

I talked to Forat he said I probably need a new inverter... Where is the inverter located?

Nvm I figured it out. Do I need to replace the whole board or do I just solder out the little box and solder a new one back into the board?

Since you have a MPC 3000, the inverter is mounted on the filter board so you will need to unsolder the inverter and swap it with a replacement one.

Before you take it out, I would try reflowing the solder joints to see if it fixes the issue -- sometimes there is a cold solder joint that prevents it from working.

I think replacement inverters from Akai dealers are around $60 each, but you can cannibalize other Akai gear like the S1000,S1000PB,S3000,S3200,S3000XL,MPC60,etc... and get the part from there. Akai S1000PBs tend to run the cheapest -- sometimes under $50 on eBay, and you can also get an extra LCD screen, backlight, disk drive, as well as lots of other goodies...

I have an s3000xl and I tried to unsolder the inverter off the board but I couldnt do it.. I have a solder sucker and I just couldnt get it out.....

UPDATE: I changed the inverter and it STILLLLL doesnt work!!! this is really pissing me off.. I guess I realy need to send it out to Forat... this is really getting me angry....

what happend was I shipped it to somebody who bought it off ebay. The buyer had buyers remorse and sent it back to me. When I got it back the backlight was not working. It has to be something that got jarred loose during shipping. I checked all the wires and all that. Anybody know what else it could be?

Before you send anything out, you should try and isolate the problem, as it may be an easy fix.

Is it just the backlight that is not working, are you able to see text on the LCD? Without the backlight, it is very dark as the backlight illuminates the LCD screen.

Do you have a multimeter? If not, you should go to your local hardware store and pick one up. You don't need a super fancy one-- a basic one will work well enough for you.

Check the voltage on the output of the inverter. This should be an AC reading. If you are getting a reading here, then check at the backlight foil. If you get a reading here on the wires, then double check your solder joints.

If you aren't getting a reading there, there are a few other things that you can check before sending it in.

The Display Contrast Knob is also an on/off switch for the backlight. You need to push it in to toggle the backlight on/off -- turning the knob only changes the intensity. Check this for continuity -- making sure it turns/on off when you push the button.

Make sure the cable that goes from the inverter to the backlight is not damaged -- you should be able to take a continuity reading through the cable.

Yeah I have a multimeter and Im not getting a reading at the inverter or the plug in the board that the plugs from the inverter into the backlight... I guess I didnt solder the inverter right or something.... im not even gonna try to mess with it I dont want to end up **** it up... Im just gonna send it out...

I have this same problem now... Just installed the Vailixi OS with success. I had changed the backlight foil earlier and before changing the foil the display contrast -button worked when pushed down: the light went on and off when pressed.

I don't know what to do now. I have double checked the soldering and it is fine. Please help me, I'm lusted to get this baby rockin'.
