Anyone doing electro / techno stuff on the 3k ?

I never see or hear anyone using the 3k for anything but boom bap (which it does great)
but is anyone here doing anything else with it ?

I want to try out some electro and dubstep sh*t,
kinda makes me wish i could afford the 5k for the effects and all the fancy stuff.

The 3k only does Boom Bap. If you try anything else it will auto delete your patterns.

I believe carl craig was using an mpc3k for a long time. I know of a hardcore producer that was using the 3k when i believe the limited edition was out. I think he went baack to trackers though:-)

I was using the 3k b4 for techno. sampling an mks80, sounded amazing sampled through and using the tuning algorithms.

Electro is pretty much hip hop with less swing, so why would it really be hard?:-) well at least electro's the original hip hop:-)

For dubstep I think the 3k will be pretty hard, since dubstep seems to be pretty reliant on time synced LFOs but making beats i tihnk an mpc is best for dubstep but nto the basslines.

i've been doing dubstep on my mpc500 pretty much same specs as 3k....and i can do it, but i am able due to the variable tuning for basslines....cept i can't get that rusko style lfo modulate bassline...:-/


i know there's a lot of house heads that've used 3k's...

it's hard i think in this day n age, most people dont use mpc3k's for anything else other than hip hop since other uints can great that popular new glitchy/lfo sound...

i am using my 60 for house...

the chemical brothers used and still uses a 3k.

My 3k finds its way into most of my productions, if only for a few sounds/textures. Check some stuff out www.lowercase-music.com , it's in the dubstep/dubtechno vein. First wax is out soon too!

Mark De Clive Lowe is a guru with a 3k and he sometimes veers into that territory. Some of the French house guys were using mpc's/sp's too - not sure if they still are.

that lowercase stuff sounds great. are you using the 3k to sequence software mostly ?

It's often just used as textures, or for certain sounds or fx. I'm hoping to do a hell of a lot more on the mp soon, once I get my studio set up properly.

id luv to have a chat.. as im a 3k owner too and wish to integrate it to my newer workflow

I use my 60 mainly for house and occasionally make some slow breaks, hiphoppy downtempo stuff too. I use it to sequence all my synths and 909. Want an 808 still. A lot of detroit deep house guys use MPCs, I think NY too. Omar S, Theo Parrish, Moodyman, Ron Hardy, etc., etc... making House with hardware and recording to tape sounds tons better than DAW cr@p.

Im using the 3k for house, breaks, dub, electro, etc.. Using the mp for drums and seq midi.. I can get some fat basses (reeces) with the3k, just copy, layer, detune, filter and repeat.. But no it doesnt really get into dubstep lfo/filtercutoff territory..
I think the 3k is really the way to go since id rather do my fx/signal chain outside the mp but def not in a computer etc.. the timing, ease of midi seq, and the way drums bang outta it make the 3k hard to beat... Buggier than the 60 by a long shot though, never had an issues w/ the 60 and the 3k is a lot more of a pita in that regard.

I think the secret to really getting a good rounded sound from the 3k with 'dance' music is some choice outboard. Rack fx, samplers, compressors, and synths are gonna add alot to your sound and the 3k can be the centerpiece. Im running

pretty simple setup and i def have a list of want-to-grip items (listed below) but with what i have i can get alot done in any of the genres mentioned in this thread...

I really want to add ($$) a mono-analog, slim phatty or similar and a emu 6400 for the filters.. and then another compressor, prob focusrite compounder, and then a midiverb and/or ensoniq dp4, and finally MAYBE a presonus eureka for my occasional vocal or mic'd sample warming/synth signal chain... If i hit lotto an analog drum synth mbase or tr909(keep dreaming), and finally a dedicated filter unit (sherman FB) will put my gear lust to bed... this eventual set-up will give me enough w/o being overwhelmed and not have gear overlapping in terms of functions..

then ill likley move up to the world of a 32:8i mixing desk
