My 60 won't load from Studio, Rock sets etc.

Hi All,

New to the group... been reading the forum for a few months while looking for a MPC. I picked up a nice 60 for $395.00 off eBay. It will sample and save to floppy (no SCSI) and load from the floppy without any issues. I made several disks from the image files downloaded from the MPC yahoo group from my XP system and old Win98 laptop using the correct DSDD floppies and I always get that the same error that my version of the OS can't load the sounds from the disks. The 60 sees the files on the disks and will load the sequence and system files but not the sounds. I have OS version 2.12. I opened the 60 up when I got it to see if any upgrades where installed but I didn't see the memory card. When I load samples though it says that I have 1.5MB of memory to work with. The memory hack has not been done either. Anyone know why I can't load the sounds from these disks?

You actually dont need these kits to make music. So what about just sampling the sounds you want into the mpc and then saving -> everything is fine

I was just curious about the error and wanted to learn why and if anyone else had the same issue.

I'm not sure what sets you downloaded. They might be in 3.11 format - try loading just the .SND files separately but perhaps you've already tried that.

2nd that though - start off by sampling the stuff you really wanna use instead. And get the scsi interface if possible

I understand most of the advantages of SCSI, but will I be able to read the Akai MPC 60 files on my other SCSI gear?

Nope, you won't. Neither the sample format nor the partition scheme itself is supported on any other machines (apart from the MPC3K) as far as I know.

However, it's dead easy to get for instance a cheap USB zip drive and exchange samples from the PC to the MPC. If you plan doing anything like that then the speed is increased tenfold. Also doing backups from memory cards/zip discs/jaz discs/whatever to PC is done easily with MPC Editor.

Thanks... just got to find the $$ for the OS and SCSI upgrades.

Anyone ever had any success using the ultra slow MIDI transfer? I only get about an hour a night in my studio and I am thinking I could start a transfer at the end of a session and get by with that for now.
