Aight : here's my question.

u will understand im no scientist..

on the http://www.mpc3000.com/ page there are a couple of apps that allow to convert from SND to standard audio format...

i was wondering the following :

-first, let's set the following premise : i believe that mpc 3000s color sounds in a very unique fashion... if you dont believe it has an effect over sound quality, plz dont bother.. or replace mpc 3000 by mpc 60 in the following sentences!

outputting sounds on my daw while they playback on the mpc results in me, obtaining a nice standard-audio-formatted 3k colored track on my computer, which i can then manipulate.

Now, will converting a .snd file to an aiff file using such program result in an mpc 3000 ''colored'' sample?

i dont think so...

but then... what is the pertinence of such programs?

it would be pertinent if someone were to tell me that the .snd encrypted sound file was already automatically affected by the analog wiring of the unit before being written down digitally (which would make very little sense)

Honestly, i dont think it would and i would vote for the idea that coloring of samples occur in the live playback of sounds thru the nicely crafted / carefully chosen analog components of the unit.... but i felt like i needed to ask

i just want to figure out whats the use of such a process.. (cuz i totally get the purpose of the other-way process)

Normally, i would test that myself.. but my unit is being repaired right know so ill kindly ask u guys  tell me or else ull be doomed.

This colour you speak of, it comes from the digital and analogue conversions. A .SND file is similar to .WAV or .AIFF. Indeed the latter and .SND were both developed by Apple IIRC. Converting these files doesn't affect the sound, just the header describing it.

Pertinent or not, that's exactly what I'm going to tell you. A line level voltage signal is converted to binary data using an Analogue to Digital converter. Which bit doesn't make sense (pun intended, naturally)?

Yes, of course the way that sound is perceived will be a direct result of its reconversion from digital to analogue to the electrical impulses in your brain via you ears.

The similarity is conceptual.

In actual terms an MPC *.SND file is structurally simple.

The A$ *.AIF / *.AIFF formats are relatively simple in structure also.

An M$ *.WAV often contains quite complex chunks of reference data.

Just to clarify a point here.

The *.SND files used by the MPC60/MPC3000 are a class of their own.

Said MPC *.SND files are not related to the MOTOROLA/SUN "AU" format; which is used by many hardware vendors ( including A$ and M$ ) and file extension suffixed in lots of situations ( confusingly ) with *.SND.

Just needed to clarify that point.

Now I understand why I can't open them up in quicktime ;).

Interesting to see MOTU's Mach 5 is able to read and convert .SND.

those answers are interesting!

im french, so please bear with me !!

If i understood, the mpc will encrypt sounds the way they electrically exist within its wires, so the sound will have an analog ''color''... or it could be the opposite and i could be a helpless french chump...

if its true, its really marvelous! it could be a great working tool!!!

if i translated that stuff right, and if my unit ever ends up being functional again (thanks to Rohan for the email exchanges, i truly appreciate that), ill run tests and post them online so people can witness ! i think its a valuable piece of information !

thanks!

ps : quicktime struggles with its own video extensions anyways :( so maybe try itunes
