Annoying Sequencer Feature

So I finish overdubbing a segment, then disable the overdub switch, machine still playing, and go to change the segment but the playback stops and I am greeted with an error message. Exit pressed, the machine goes to the segment I had selected - but I still need to press play.

If the MPC knows which segment I want to play next, why does it insist on stopping playback between the two segments? Its annoying and kills the workflow somewhat. There are 2 extra steps involved and the machine stops playing while you execute these.

By segment you mean sequence right? i know what you mean.. must have been a reason for this??

that sounds odd... does it always do that even on previously made projects? .. like, did this just start happening recently?

Yes. Sequence. Not segment.

Again, steps to get to this message:

1. overdub on and playing sequence
2. overdub off without stopping
3. sequence change

Its not a show stopper but it can be quite annoying.

prob just so you dont accidentally write over another seq..

SP1200 is the same way

You record anything, you have to hit stop and play or hit stop then change sequence, then play..otherwise you'll get the error message (MPC3K) or nothing will happen (SP1200)

The internal mechanism for opening a sequence runs in two distinct modes.

Open for Playback.

Open for Record/Over Dub.

The behavior you are seeing is consistent with all MPC3000 OS versions.

In short ? Memory and process protection within a volatile environment.

Mechanism differences behind play and record/overdub mode are such that the system has to halt in order for a state change.

The other MPC models, MPC2000, MPC2000XL will block sequence change attempts when they are in record/over dub mode.

Vailixi 3.50 includes a feature to disable the transport error message warnings and block sequence change attempts if the system is running in record/overdub mode:

Toggle the transport mode error setting to make the machine behave like an MPC2000/MPC2000XL where sequence change request are concerned when in record/overdub mode.

Thank you for the explanation. I have completely missed that feature on your upgrade. I will definitely give that a shot. I think the confusion arises from the fact that the record / overdub can be switched off during playback, but the sequencer is still technically in record / overdub until halted.
