Hi guys,
I'm writing you after reading the manual and reading tons of posts on various forums... still, I didn't find a proper answer to my question, even if I have the suspect that the (negative) solution is near... But I want to be sure so here i am tapping on your shoulder...

I own both the 2500 and the 60, and i want to use the 60 as my main sequencer, cause the timing is much better than both my daw and the 2500 IMO...

I've started without reading the manual, and i've connected my mpc midi out 1 to the s950 midi in, and i wish to use the 950 just with its tone program to create an easy but effective bassline.

first of all I've sampled some drum shots and made a beat on a drum track of the 60.

then I've assignned the right out channel on the mpc and set the trk to midi, but soon realized i went wrong at all... No midi signal were send to the s950...I was thinking in a 2500 way... mistake...

Then I've realized that if I wanted to send midi notation to external sources using the pads I had to set the track in drum mode.
There start my struggle... while I was playing around with pads to made the bassine notation, I hit a pad in which a drum sample was assigned and realised that the sequencer recorded not only the bass note of the s950 but also the drum sample... i could using pad's bank b and transposing the bass sound on the s950 but i find it really annoying...

same problem occuring even when i changed the external module, changing the s950 with a waldorf microwave.

Do you understand what I mean? the 64 midi notes (35 to 98) are not all available cause some of them are already assigned to drum samples...

how can I avoid this sound overlap?

i want to feel free to use all the midi notes available without having to renounce at the mpc sampling engine cause i love it...

Can I reach this in the mpc60 or not?

I've tried almost everything... local on then off, soft thru on then off, changed the midi notes value from gm to chromatic progression, in program and master, i've check the midi connection and channel a tons of times but nothing seems to work...

Sorry again, I know this must be annoying for you but I can't figure this situation out...

thx for your help

You've ran into one of the MPC60's limitations.
Change either your note number assignments or what pads your samples are assigned to so that they dont conflict.
You need to think of it as having one sound per pad to have both internal/external sounds working together.. That sound can either be an internal sample , an external MIDI note or a layered sound consisting of the 2.
Alternatively, you could plug in a MIDI keyboard or pad controller to the MPC MIDI input and use that for your external gear.

Are you sure?? If I understand you right you cant trigger the 950 (Bass) with the MPC Pads without also playing the samples (Drums) that are assigned to these pads on the MPC, right?

Just a thought. I dont own a 60 so this could be complete nonsense :)
I just looked into the manual and I dont understand everything but what up with that channel number 16 that is assigned to the internal sample engine (a so called drum track)? I wonder what happen if you turn the track you want to play the bassline with to another MIDI channel than 16. To me the manual is not very clear if the pads will only send out MIDI then.

Shouldnt you put the S950 on whatever Midi Out you are using say its Midi out C because you have a Synthesizer on B and your DAW on A...

Damn, I had my 3000 hooked up with the 5000 a while back.....

Put the S950 on Midi Out C

Turn the drum track to 1C and that should be your S950 being triggered...I dont know what Im saying but I know kinda what Im trying to say get it?

I hope this can point you in the right direction.

So after a bit of dicking around I can get close to what the OP wants but it's not ideal.

Go to the MIDI routing page and switch off local control.
Go back to the main page and set "type" to drum.
Set the MIDI out port and channel to match your S950.

The pads will now be triggering your S950 without triggering the internal sounds.
However, if you record what you play, the sequencer will trigger the internal sounds when it loops back around.
Once your sequnce is recorded you have to change "type"on the main page back to MIDI to only hear the S950.

The section in the manual you are talking about only appears in the Akai os2 manual and not the RL os 3 manual.
I think it's basicly saying that whatever channel you start recording internal drum sounds on - stick with that channel It defaults to channel 16 but can be changed to whatever you want.

I dont think it is relevant to os3 as on mine you dont need to set a channel for internal sounds and if you change channel on a track after recording, the same sounds are still triggered. This seems contrary to what the os 2 manual appears to be saying.

The swing algos are the same but they run on different hardware which is what makes the difference people hear/measure.

do you mean the sample being truncated itself is what makes you perceive the swing?

I'm kind of lost. I use a 2000xl and a 60 3.03 os and it seems like the 53% 1/16 seems to sound better to me on the 60.

I'm lost here. Can you explain this more? How does the 60 handle the same 1/16 groove differently compared to a non roger linn model?

but the truncating samples slightly off is also great in conjunction with some stuff being swing-ed and some stuff being un-quantized .. within reason of course.

yeah I dont know what the exact difference between the 60 and xl swing however if there is a particular timing you are trying achieve then practice your timing so you can turn it off and get the exact result that sounds good to your ears.

When I sequence my s 950 or some synth : I got to midi swith the
internal sound generator off and set a track to "1A" - using midi channel
A program or patch 1. Now i use the pads or some keys to play some melody or
Whatever. When done - swith the track from drum to midi so the mpc will just
trigge the s950 or synth and doesn't play internal sounds on the same midi notes.
It's to easy - no limitations @ all.
