rawk! got my mpc-60

It's got a few problems but my roomie and elmacaco are helpin' me out. It WAS in darn good looking shape cept the seller didn't pack it too well and the rear part of the plastic side panel got somewhat smushed. yeesh. The main problem is the floppy is flakey but it might be saveable. Sometimes it loads from the disk and sometimes it won't. Wow I wish I could afford the scsi. Oh it already had the memory upgrade too! yaya.

Other than that, I learned how to make a sequence in 10 minutes on it. I hardly looked at the manual and FOR ME... that is just amazing cos I'm pretty musical but not very technical. I think I have finally found my beat making nirvana. I mean, I've been in front of it for a total of 30 minutes andalready my hands know where to go quickly to do the things I've learned. That's so cool.

The disk drive is probably dirty. My drive was giving me occasional errors when I first got my 60. Just get a floppy drive cleaner from Radioshack and it should solve your problems (as it did mine).

I subsequently got the SCSI (which is invaluable) but I still use my disk drive extensively to load samples via my comp with MPC Editor.

Now I got a brand new floppy drive that looks just like the original and matches the colors. yay. I want the scsi thing and pretty wooden side panels now. ha ha.

yes, after we messed around with a pile of jumpers on the bak of the thing. I formatted 10 dd disks in a row np then and it works beautiful. The thing to do is look for mostly Teac made drive that have a bunch of little white jumpers on the back of the drive. There is an Akai scsi article online that explains what to do at http://akaiscsifaq.digidude.net/akaifaq_floppy.htm but K says she had to set the jumpers different.

It would be really cool to have a zip drive inside the mpc though. K and her friend J tryin' to figure out how to do that. I am trying to figure out where to put it in the studio.. it's huge!

My friend K also sprayed cleaner in the controls and some stuff that stops rust (?) in eack connector she took apart. There is still one button, the + button, that will not be a proper button and the 2 button is kinda lazy.

i dont think it is refering to the mpc60 though...

but if this site is correct you can just use any old DD floppy drive(for the mpc60) that has configurable jumpers, you just have to figure out the configuration yourself??!!!?!?

Yeah ALejandra, can you get those jumper settings to us?

That would be quite valuable. Perhaps also the name and model of the drive.

Hey. Alejandra and I share a studio and she told me this web board was cool. I didn't know anything about the MPC-60 until she went gaga over it and now I want to learn it too.

Yes the MPC-60 floppy is just a PC floppy but it hasto be configured differently from a IBM type PC to work... just like an Amiga does. A floppy that will work in one Akai will wrk in another... at least I know that it will work in 900, 950, 1000 and MPC-60. Probably also 2000, s/mpc3000 too. Dunno about the new fancy stuff - don't have any new fancy stuff in our studio and probably never will.

It doesn't have to be a Teac but they last really well. I bought two for the studio at a hamfest for $5. The jumpers on the back look just like the ones in the picture at the link that Ale posted but they are set differently. The left side, which controls the DS0, is the same but the right side I had to mess around with... I will post the stuff on my studio web pages when I get a chance. Here's what mine looks like in ascii - the straight lines are the jumpers.

Ya just hafe to fiddle with it. Like if the drive light comes on when there is no floppy it means the detect line jumper needs to be reversed. But if you find a Teac with the 28 tiny jumper block in the rear you will eventually get it all together.

im hoping so.... i cant remember if the floppy in my 60 did indeed have jumpers on it... imma have to open it up again and check it out....

elmacaco: hehe, ive been posting here since October or so and i just now figured out how to get a pic goin in the avatar, LOL!!! yea man, Percee P is one of the most slept on MCs around... i had the privelege to meet him last week at a show he rocked out here in LA, cool dude... he just got married and is living in LA... he also is recording an LP for STONESTHROW RECORDS in which he said Madlib and JayDilla will be doing the majority of his production! i cant wait... keep your eyes open for "PERSEVERENCE"(not sure if i spelled it right) on STONESTHROW sometime in early 2005... 12"s should drop sometime this year though...

whoa that bites it. you upgraded and the floppy stopped working? I can't even think of a good reason why that could happen but I really don't know much about this I just kind of bumble around trying this and that 'til stuff starts working. yeah I would check and see if it has some jumpers on it an good luck.

hiya elmacaco... fankoo fankoo. yanno I was so busy worrying about jumpers on that drive I didn't even notice if it was DD or HD. I have to open the 60 up again anyway to replace a few switches (got the mouser # from your older post here) for Ale and I can looky and get the model number of the drive and double check on the jumpers too, if that''ll help anyone.

IF it's an HD drive it should be fine, but you must use HD disks, if no, use the DD's only, a guy on the 60 yahoo group just lost his floppy because of using HD floppies.
