I don't have an Sp12/1200, never have. But I do have an MPC60, used to have an S900 (sold it), and have a maxed out S950 coming 
(couldn't afford an Emax nor an SP, and couldn't justify paying 2-3 times more for an SP1200 with its' limited sequencer)
Anyways...my question:
Exactly what kind of filtering is done in the SP1200 that gives it the sought after and acclaimed (or hyped?, lol) phat sounds??? I am aware the filters are fixed and non-adjustable, but at the same time, each of the 8 outputs give different amount of filtering - some more or less filtering than other outputs. I also am aware that each voice has it's own filter (so if I were to just run my MPC60 through a single analog filter, it isn't quite the same). So back to my question... what kind of filtering is done in the SP? ..HP, LP, BP, Notch? ...does it add any extra resonance or is the resonance kept at zero (like a resonance knob on an external filter)? Are the envelopes at zero and unaltered? Is any LFO added or is is neutral as well?
Reason I ask is I am just maybe trying to recreate the SP sound with my MPC60 and S950. I know the S950 and MPC60 are true 12 bit, while the SP really samples in 8-bit while outputting in 12-bit..so that could be a big difference in itself. Also, the SP is at a lower 26khz, while the MPC60 is at a higher 40khz..but, the S950 is adjustable, so I could always set that to a lower 26'ish khz...
..but this topic is mainly on the analog filtering... would running my S950 and MPC60 through some analog filters sound similar to the SP1200? ..or not even close? I ask because I never played with an SP. And yes, I have tried running some MPC60 sounds through my filter (I have a MF101, Filter Factory and used to have a Peavey and MiniWorks as well)..and yes, it sounds much more phat..EVEN when the filters are totally closed ...the MF-101 gives alot of phatness, even closed..while the Filter Factory gives some really nice booms at certain sweet spots on HP and BP mode.
Anyone ever compare an SP1200 to a 12-bit Akai sampler w/ an analog filter?
Which would sound better? ..or can the Akai w/ an analog filter even come close to the SP sound at all?
Are the filters inside the SP1200 better than stand alone filters out there like the MF-101, Allen Heath, Electrix Filter Factory, Waldorf, Frostwave, etc..etc.?
I would think an Akai 12-bit w/ an external filter would kind have the edge, as a filter has adjustability unlike the fixed filters of an SP1200 (although I know the SP has a filter per voice though; would that really matter since it's fixed in the first place?)
Will a LP, HP or BP sound closer to the SP1200?
..loving my MF101 and FF... wish I could find a Frostwave for cheap though.
