was lucky enough to find two replacement drives in works junk room

this was amazing as digging for one has been less than fuitlless

i tryed both in the 60

the jumpers are set the same as the faulty one i removed but they are not working

i am aware that you can perform modifications on these drives

i have been digging around with the help of a mate and found this

is this the answer?

i would rather check before i attempt the mod and potentially ruin a drive

especially as they seem to be hard to get hold of

sorry if this is a repost but i have dug around for a few days now and an answer on my own question is better than a handfull on other peoples

Take a look at the PCB of the drive that was installed before and compare the parts mentioned in the article (your link) with your "new" drives. The old drive probably already have this setting (resistor on the soldering points RDY). If it is so and your new drives have the resistor on position DC then heat up your soldering iron :)

The puzzle gets worse :(

The original drive doesn't have the settings change

The make, model and settings are identical.

The drive was dead when I got it, but this was a plastic clip and the reader that had broken.

I am so confused

According to some threads and mpc60 for sale ads... This drive should work

So you got a 60 with a broken original drive and two drives that are exactly like the original (brand,model, jumpers, resistors on same positions) thatalso don't work. I'm a bit confused and to me it seem a bit like the drives are not the problem. What about the floppy disks? Sure they are ok?
How do the drives behave when you power up the 60? Have you tried to load something from disk or have you tied to format a disk?
Are you sure the flat data cable is connected the right way?

Most of those drives you listed on that webpage are still pretty easy to get as the Mitsumi and the Samsungs were OEM drives used by many PC manufacturers. A quick eBay search will

Disk drives for the MPC 60 need a few settings for them to work properly. Normal PC drives will need these changed.

Drive Select (DS) must be set to 0
Ready Output (RDY) must be set on Pin 34
Disk Density must be set by HD in on Pin 2

I don't have the D359T3 drive in front of me, but you may have to run a jumper wire for the RDY output to the pin if the trace is not on the board.

It may be possible that your disks are bad which is why they are not being read by the MPC. Remember you need to use DD disks in an MPC 60 so you will have to put tape over the density hole on a HD disk.

Also in some cases, if you are using a newer floppy drive, you may have to invert the cable to get the MPC to see the drive. This is because the MPC does not use a crossover ribbon cable like a PC.

If your using HD disks data is more likely to become corrupt as the magnetic fields in HD and DD disks have a different density.

When I replaced my floppy I'm fairly sure my tech only inverted certain lines on the cable.

Ok guys; I spent a few hours mulling it over, killed a drive :( as in it started buzzing and wouldn't stop.

I used the top reader and the plastic eject clip to fix the original drive.

I then test the original and it didn't work either, so I guess the previous owner broke it trying to fix it.

I performed the micro pcb fuse relocation to RDY and played about with the jumper settings until the drives worked.

I now have to perfect drives :)

What a nightmare
