be weary of Jaz drives. they're very unstable.

Hmmm ...
My MPC3000 has destroyed JAZ carts during the format process.
Seems some JAZ drives suffer from a firmware bug that causes the "Z-TRACKS" of a cart to become damaged after said drive has been issued with a hardware low-level format command via a SCSI command initiator; in this instance ... the MPC3000.
The carts are pretty much toast after such an event and can't be hardware low-level formatted again.
Iomega have no idea how to fix the carts after such an event.
Comments from anyone else on their experiences connecting a JAZ drive to their MPC3000 ?
Some one must be using one without issues ?

I have a jaz drive I haven't used, I'll test it on the 60 and see if it works at all.

I stick to using:
a): External cased fixed SCSI drives ... 540meg or there about in size.
b): SCSI zip drives.
c): SCSI flash card reader/writers.

I hooked up the jaz drive to the 60 today.
Same deal as zip, start it up, cancel the scsi detect, format the disk, make the scsi active on the SCSI ID on the drive, saved a sample no problem.
Onteresting that it only let me partition it to the max 26 partitions, would go no lower. But at 30 megs, I'll fill up the file limit before comming close to filling the memory, and I had to borrow a cable from another setup, so it isn't gonna stay.
But it works.

Ok ... this points to an error in the firmware of one of my JAZ drives.

Buy an "external SCSI drive case with built in powersupply" ...
Find an old 1gig or less 50 pin SCSI I or II drive...
Mount the drive in the case ... wire it up correctly ... voila !

the jaz seems to work ok for me. but you can't use the hole drive due to the formating the 3000 does.no problems yet(fingers crossed)

I have one on my 2000XL and I have'nt had any problems. I did format mine on the PC though so maybe that's why. I know this does'nt help you out at all, but I just thought I would post.
