Hey Folks.
So I've set up an oldschool hip-hop production setup based around a 8 track tape machine, an SP-12, an 808 and an mpc-60. Here's the thing.

I have the MPC set up to send Midi clock to my KMS-30 which sends sync to the 808. That works.

I have the tape machine set up to send SMPTE to the MPC 60. THAT works.

BUT

When I hit play on the tape machine, I can't get the MPC to recieve smtpe AND send MIDI Clock out to the 808.

I saw Rohan comment in another thread that it can be done, but I can't get it to work.
The MPC only seems to send Midi clock if you "play start" and not if you "play".

Has anyone done this? How can I make this happen.

Thanks!

This is a shot in the dark idea, is there some kind of sysex message you can enter at he start of a midi track on the mpc60? Kind of like manually writing your own midi sync function
Also what 8track are you using? Have you seen the tascam 688? It has on board sync'd midi channels built into it. Looks like a pilots flight terminal though.

Also a no brainier, but just in case, the Mpc shouldnt send any smpte once you have the the sync track recorded to tape.

Then I'm pretty sure once youre running off the tape sync, the play and play start buttons on the Mpc itself won't work the same way, it'll just wait until it hears the smpte signals for position. Least that's what I think is happening, I'm using mpc2000 and a tascam 488.

Hey.
Thanks for your reply.

I used to sync a 2k classic with smpte, and your right. On that unit if you hit play it waits for the sync signal. But the 60 seems to be different. The play buttons work
As they should, but it will also sync when it hears Smpte.

Heres an interesting thing regarding the midi clock that is going to the 808. If I hit play start, then it sends midi clock, however if I just hit play, then it doesn't. I feel like when it receives smpte it's engaging "play" rather than "play start". It's reacting the same way.

This is such a bummer. This is the final kink in getting this rig to work.

Another shot in the dark here...

I wouldn't have thought SMPTE and midi clock were compatible in a sync chain in the way that you hope. Why do I say this?

Well SMPTE is a time-based method of synchronisation which will lock machines together based on absolute (or linear) time FRAMES, SECONDS, MINUTES and HOURS. With SMPTE tempo changes are not directly recognised, absolute time is paramount.

Midi clock is a tempo-based method of synchronisation which will lock machines together based on the TEMPO of the master device. Unlike SMPTE, midi clock recognises tempo changes on the master device and reflects these in all slave devices.

My argument here is that the incompatability of these two synchronisation standards (SMPTE and midi clock) may be the cause of your frustration. If you consider the golden rule of synchronisation, you must have only ONE master device to which all SLAVE devices take the synchronisation signal. And generally, your master device should be sending one type of synchronisation signal only (SMPTE, midi timecode, midi clock, DIN Sync, FSK, SMART FSK).

There are sync conversion boxes on the market, such as the OP's Korg KMS-30 or those from Innerclock Systems which may provide a solution for converting/ using multiple synchronisation methods together in some way allowing the user to sync old hardware (analogue tape, drum machines, sequencers etc) with newer hardware and software products.

Essentially, what I'm saying is you cant have both the tape machine and the MPC60 both as MASTER, sending out two different sync formats. without knowing the workings of the KMS-30 it is difficult to comment further. I'd consider making the MPC60 the master device, with all others slaved to midi clock.

So the MPC will respond to FSK tape sync AND send MIDI clock. But the KMS 30 isnt playing well with FSK at all. So the best I've got so far is striping the tape with FSK, then syncing the MPC to that while it spits out Midi clock to the KMS/808. That being said, without SMPTE, overdubs are totally out of the question. So, I think I'm going to just manually overdub the 808 on to a tracks of tape.

I'm pretty much at the end of my rope... Boo..

What OS are you running ?
I've got 3,10e and while I type this it's syncing to smpte from my DAW while sending MIDI clock to other stuff.
I hit play on the DAW and as soon ae the MPC60 locks to the SMPTE stream it sends clock. I dont need to hit "play" or "play start" on the 60 to make it work.
Do you have anything else to test MIDI clock with other than the KMS ?
