Need advice for CF Reader for MPC3000.

So I got myself a cf reader and 1gb card. I can save short sequences (8 bars or so), but I can't seem to save programs, songs, and long sequences.

Seems pretty strange to me that I can only do one, but not the other.

I've read all the forums formatting and partitioning. Am I missing something?

I'm grateful for any help and advice.

post a pic of the CF drive and the CF card you are using - I can prob tell you what your problem is.

Compact Flash Card problem it is , My Son.

or, he's using some kind of PCD reader thats never going to work in the 3000 - or a Addonics etc that will only work in a 2000xl.

plenty of possible issues - thats why pics are needed

I suspect you may be right about that, no mention of MPC3000 anywhere on the sellers list of products that I can see except in the 'about us' section. Mostly refers to MPC2000/XL, S50000/6000, ASR-10. I suggest the OP email the seller to confirm the compatibility of the drive he has.

Depending on where the OP got the drive he may have been misled, misinformed, or simply assumed the card reader would work with any MPC.

True, either that or I need to get a SanDisk Ultra II or III. This was the description on the listing which might back-up your suggestion (in bold below):

Accessories included: MPC3000 SCSI Cable and Power Cord (compact flash card must be purchased elsewhere).

Comment: Maximum drive space access on flash card for MPC3000 is 780MB. So, we recommend using smaller size compact flash cards or there will be so much unused space in the larger cards.

Comment: FYI, our MPC3000 customers are running AKAI OS 3.11 version and using compact flash brand Sandisk Ultra II and Ultra III successfully.

Comment: We do not own an MPC3000 but tested on our MPC2000, MPC2000XL, and S6000 and the drive is compatible. In addition, this drive is assembled by the correct components that make the drive compatible with the MPC3000. well its not a PCD at any rate.

the CF to IDE adapter itself is standard cheap Chinese one (that cost $/£15 max), inside with be a SCSI to IDE bridge, Acard one no doubt.

So in theory it should actually work - so try the Sandisk Ultra as mention - also try a Sandisk Extreme III

you will only get 780meg formatted, so stick with 1GB cards...

how much does this cost BTW? its kinda big and ugly - they could have found a smaller enclosure.

IF the change of card doesn't work

you could ask them what bridge they used, and what the firmware is - there are threads on compatible firmware on this forum if you google it.

the combo of a UW Acard with this CF>IDE tray might not be a good combo for example.

if all that fails you need to open it up and try different jumper settings.

I've got that exact same drive with my MPC.....didn't they tell you to only use the Sandisk Ultra II 1gb cards? That's what was recommended and mine works 100% fine. Here's the card I bought.

***EDIT: After re-reading this thread....I can almost guarantee that it is your CF card. That same drive with my 3k on 3.11 OS and an Ultra II 1gb work flawlessly.

Well thats good news, perhaps you should have taken the sellers advice in the first place. Not all CF cards will work successfully so go with whats recommended and you should be good.

Thanks everyone. I'm just hoping it's just the difference of using the SanDisk. Hearing that you have the same drive and that it works with the SanDisk Ultra II is giving me hope.

Frankly, the cf reader just came in on Friday, and I was hoping to find SanDisk at my local electronic store on my way home, but they only carried this generic one. I bought it anyway to test it out, and because I managed to save all my first few sequences, I thought it worked. I should of tested the full gamut (saving a song, programs, and longer sequences, etc.) Anyway, I still have the receipt so I will return it.

The SanDisk Ultra II is on it's way, hopefully it'll get here by Monday. Sirparksalot, thanks for the link.

Seed78. This drive cost me $260. Thanks for all your suggestions. I'll try the disk and see how it goes. If it doesn't work, I'll try your other suggestions.

Yessir. No problem. I think mpcstoragesolutions gives a 14 day guarantee that their stuff works (if you are still inside that window). But.....the card should make the difference.

Another tip with this drive:
After you partition into the 26 or so parts on the MPC 3000, lets say that you save a beat on partition A. It is fine to copy to files onto your computer for storage....but DO NOT delete the files from your card using the computer. Just copy them into your PC, eject the card, and erase the files on the MPC. I don't know why, but the MPC will not recognize the card if you delete files with the computer (at least mine won't; using Mac OSX 10.6). Just thought I would warn you!!

Well, the store humbly took back the disk they sold me. The scandisk ultra II worked and everyone admits that old gear has a strange, yet attractable fickleness to 'em.
