Partitions?

someone hip me to the slang....

I finally figured out the SCSI thing, I didn't have the termination on, but the bad news is that the disk dude gave me was broken and got stuck in the jaz drive...**** it, I threw it away and won an Ebay auction for a SCSI Zip/Jaz and card for my computer...I'm all SCSI'd out now

I went to format the Jaz drive and the MPC says it'll be broken into partitions, how many should I choose? I'm really not familiar with the terminology, but how many do you prefer? I ASSume it's similar to folders?

It's kind of like breaking down your harddrive into separate compartments. I guess you could liken them to separate folders containing a certain amount of disk space each. I usually use 4 partitions (4X25mb) just to keep things even.

You are breaking a large disk into smaller logical disk. Check the manual; page 185 - 186

aha... this is why the machine that was Deta!ls and is now mine is set to 4 partitions... I'm testing zips out now too... anyway it seems to me that it would be logical to do the reverse... I set up 25 partitions of 4 megs each thinking that no song is going to be more than four megs... I will be able to store 25 songs on each zip that was a 100meg zip...

correct me if I'm wrong... oh and I have Deata!ls manual too... looking at page 185-186...

not sure if your working on the 60, but on my 60 i find 20 partitions of 5mb to be great, partitions A-T i believe... Elmacaco suggested this along time ago, and it worked out cool so ive been doing it ever since... 20 partitions of 5mb each, which fits about 6-7 DD floppy disks on one partition...


its about time for me to spend some time in that 60 bible faq again too...

Yeah I'm on a 60... I guess I choose to partition at 25 par of 4mb each because I never remember making a song that was bigger than 4mb... but I am new to the 3.xx os and the saving option of using a zip drive so I'm open to all suggestions.... thanks

yeah, I make a bunch now as well, since I'm using racks for other sounds, I usually make A-Z partitions now

Wit A-T you have 20 partitions, 5Mb's each. This will hold 3 full memory kits plus 500 KB's for sequences & Songs.

The way I wonk this keeps me going. Sure sometimes you don't use all 5MBs and you can't fit another kit in there, but it isn't so bad, Zips are cheap, and it beats cycling through every PGM and ALL on the disk for the latest project.

What I would like to do is just store all the files associated with a particular song on its own partition... the most I ever used before was whatever can fit on two 1.44 floppies...
