I gotta say The Sp has some nice Analogue Filters, but how do com[are to the MPC 3000 FILTERS?

By elmacaco Wed Oct 06, 2004 5:23 pm
well most of the SP's filters are fixed, and no control of resonance at all.

the 3000 has decent filters with resonance and good control.

**** em both for filters. Run them through a moogerfooger filter and you wont look back.

which moogerfooger though, the new 'band' filter or the ol' low pass? been lookin into gettin' some kind of filter device for a while. moogerfooger's look nice but damn there expensive. had the electrix eq killer & filter queen a few years back and sold'em when i got into a pinch, wish i still had'em. my friend has a kaoss2 and he gets some pretty good results w/ just using it, whadda ya think?

peace

I've got the 1st gen moogerfooger which just sounds superb. I also own a fair few modules from what was once a Moog 3c modular so I've often compared it to the old 1960s filters and it has that same taste. You can't go wrong, but yeah, they're expensive.

Kaoss pads are fun. Brilliant invention that I totally forgot about. I've never owned one but I've used them live for brass and vocal warping. The v2 is midi controllable isn't it?. Means you should be able to automate it in the MPC sequencer. Now that is worth thinking about!.

I've never used a MoogerFooger, but it just HAS to be good - Bob knows his stuff.

If you like your filters more flexible, organic, weird, dirty, experimental etc.. Check out the Sherman Filterbank. Great distortion unit also.

The Akai MFC is nice because it's stereo, but it's rather tame and very predictable. Good for DJs who want to sweep a filter over the entire mix - For producers, filter-sweeping the whole drum track stopped being fashionable about 2 weeks after the Chemical Brothers were big.

I've owned a Kaoss Pad 2 and sold it. There's only a handful of useful FX among the 100 presets, and most sound kinda cheap. Editability is almost zero. Nice for live performance and DJs, but severely limited in the studio. Very toy-like in many ways.

" Good for DJs who want to sweep a filter over the entire mix"

There is nothing that says you have to sweep the entire mix with the MFC. Actually the MFC is better designed at individual sounds than any other filter unit made since it has a mono filter in addition to the stereo filter.

Sherman - mono
Peavey - mono
Electrix - stereo (only 2 -pole in stereo, 4-pole mono)
Moog - mono, only LPF

how much is that thing? that looks real nice. i got a little alesis mod fx filter and i use my ms2000s filter on samples. the mod fx is real nice and handy. No midi though but 24 bit a to d. sounds real nice. 4 types and like 6 diff modulatin effects. it also can sync up to bpms real nice. Its on ebay now for dirt cheap. ive seen em for 15 to 30 bucks. Alesis philtre

I think it is about 600 due to crappy US to Euro conversion, but it has 4 independant multimode analog filters, with envelopes and envelope followers on each, a distortion / wavefolding section with each filter, and two LFO's shared between all 4 units. No midi that I know of.
