mpc 3000 newbie help!

hey;

just got my mpc today.

i was cruising along good, loading in samples and recording a pattern.

all of a sudden, the pattern i was working on disappeared, and now i can't get it to go back into record mode. i can get the screen to say "record ready" but pushing the record / overdub modes does nothing.

also, i note that the default length of my patterns is 0 bars. shouldn't it be 2 bars? i just wonder if i hit a button or something that has me screwed up. hope it's not the machine. help!!!

Go to initialize all parameters, I think it's either under other or soft button 4 when you hit erase.

I think those are two different initialize, you want system parameters initialize.

Naw, hit soft button 1 under other.

ok, initialize under "other" doesn't seem to do anything. (i hit the first option, the initialize all data one.)

it only works if i initialize under erase, and then it only works for that sequence. all the rest of the sequences have a default bar length of 0.

or... maybe the default is supposed to be zero bars? that's what it says in the manual, anyway... wierd.

(the 1k had a default of 2 bars)

you can set the default by initializing the first sequence with no seqs loaded, it should change them all.

It sounds like you "locked" the transport into "Deferred MMC PLAY/WAIT" mode.

The short cut to do this comes from holding down the STOP key and while keeping it depressed, pressing the PLAY key.

Your MPC3000 transport controls will now have the function of sending MMC commands. The MPC3000 will wait then for the reception of compatible MMC start messages via MIDI when in this mode before the transport will start the sequence running.

If nothing is received in this mode then the machine will sit there in a dumb state.

Repeat the key press procedure above to renable the transport into normal operation mode.

As for default bar lengths in SEQUENCES:

With the transport in a stopped position, press ERASE, then INITIALISE, dial in the value you want for default sequence length, perform the initialisation.

Machine should remember this value from now on.

I'd be surprised if the MPC-60 with latest OS didn't have this function.

yes yes yes!!!

that was it. i noticed it was acting like it was waiting for external communication, so i started messing around in the midi/sync menus. just started to panic as it cost me a grip and came thru ebay. breathing easier now.

got the manual printed out now and will dig into it... just to say, this is a RAW machine to make beats on!!!! so happy i got it!!! just popped some meters breaks in there... dayummm!!!

Rohan, I think you are right.

If on an unused sequence in play mode I hold stop and press play, it will go dumb. But if I hit overdub or record and put it in record mode play and playstart work as expected.

Is this consistent with the 3000?

Also, what is this good for? I've never used MMC at all, so it's application in this case kind of escapes me.

Pretty much...

MMC is of use when you have MMC controlled tape machines ( Certain FOSTEX/TASCAM models), DR16's, Fairlights MFX boxes, etc.

The transport MMC stuff is part of the MPC3000 pro-equipment interfacing capabilities.

Most people would never bother using that aspect in this day and age.

What's the use of the record button making the transport work? Will that start the tape machine recording?

MMC has many commands.
