recording midi notes

ok so i wanna play a bassline on my mpc, from midi to my computer/vsti
is there a way so in step edit i can enter the note i want from my midi keyboard ? or do i have to find the letter of the note like c2 or wahtever then enter that in manually ?

also...
on the s900 is there anyway to line in from the back ?

yes, if you set up the track as a midi track, the midi note you hit should show up in the step edit screen.
