In the MPC 3000, is it true that you need the EPROM chip installed first in order to boot a new operating system from floppy? I thought you could boot a new OS from floppy even if you don't have the EPROM installed.

I have OS 3.10 and have a floppy with OS 3.11. I turn on the 3k, then I insert the floppy, when I try to load the .SYS file, it says this file type cannot be loaded.

You probably have a bad .sys file.
I had OS 3.11 chips and was able to update to OS 3.16 on a floppy so it can be done.
For shitz and grins I even tried to downgrade the OS when I eventually installed OS 3.5 chips and went to OS 3.16 on floppy and it still worked.

I have OS 3.10. You need to have OS 3.11 or higher in order to boot the 3.11 OS from floppy. Otherwise, for those that have 3.10 OS, you have to get the internal EPROM upgraded to 3.11 first. As far as I know!
