MPC 60 disc drive problem

Just got a 60 nd loving it, BUT when I try to format discs it comes up with the ff04 error message (defect found in the area reserved for the file directory) is this a disc or disc drive problem and what can I do? Cheers

Are you using DD/DS 720k disks? or regular HD 1.44Mb disks?

Regular HD discs, as the quest for DD discs has been tricky, only managed to get given one by a bloke in a computer shop who thought I was mad Just gone and got some new discs and a drive cleaner...I'll let you know how they go

Don't use HD disks, this is how these problems occur and you will mess up your drive eventually.

Go on ebay, people got unused DD disks, you can get 100 of them for $20 sometimes cheaper,

before I got my scsi working, I used the HD floppies for quite a bit and never ran into problems with it.. you saying over time the HD floppies mess things up in the drive?

Ever notice how many people have 60's with failing drives? Well, a large part of it comes from using HD disks. just because you didn't run into problems doesnt mean you wont in the future. Well, now that you have SCSI you probably never use the drive, but yes, HD disks use a diferent magnetic standard, it can mess up your drive because both the disk and the drive are magnetic, and so they mess with each other if miss matched. if I remember right, the DD drive can't write the data deep enough onto the disk, so you get a lot of failed disks and corrupted data over time, after a lot of HD disk use, your drive will lose its power to properly write and Format floppies. Then you get a lot of bum disks and a lot of disks not recognized.

DD disks are cheap, I bought 100 of them for $20 and almost finished them by the time I got my SCSI upgrade. You should use the disks the drive was designed to use. Unless you have a replacement drive that can handle both disks.

cheers for that, I thought they would be fine as it says you could use them on the Roger Linn site with no warning of the potential dangers, I'm gonna get ebaying...

I guess roger wants to sell scsi kits so he doesn't care what happens to your floppy!!
