Akai s900/950's A/D ?

I want to know about these units A/D.The reason being I want to know if I should use it like an outboard gear, just plug the out from my keyboard into the in of the akai s, and out of the akai s into the DAW or should I just sample the sound(s).I know the ASR's A/D are 18 bit 44khz, so I was thinking the Akai S might actually be 14 or 16 bit 44khz.I think the manual would have this information, but they're not on the AKAI site any more

I believe the S900 and S950 highest sample rates are 12 bits at 40KHz

it does no conversion to digital until you sample.

elmaaco-oops well I just mean what bit-rate/sample rate are the analog inputs and outputs at ?

misterv-Are you sure your not just talking about the sampler , and not the A/D D/A's?For example the ASR-10 samples at 16 bit , however its A/D are 18 bit , and D/A are 20 bit.




Hmmm maybe Im wrong I thought the A/D's D/A's are related to the ins/and outs

Like say if i run a 808 drum from a TR-808 into the AKAI s900, and out of it, not sampling or anything,will it sound the same or different?

It would add noise, nothing more, it's just a monitr with an extra gain stage, nothing more, like I said above, the A/D only comes into play when you sample, otherwise it is just an analog pass through situation.

Head to the corner! Sample with your samplers, ain't no lazy way to get the good grit!

sampling frequency: 7.5khz-40khz continuously variable, 12-bit sampling...

s950

sampling rate: 7.5khz-48khz continuously variable, 12-bit sampling, 16-bit processing...

these are stats from the pages of both manuals...

and,

elm was right, you MUST sample into the machine to take advantage of the AD/DA converters...

what does this mean exactly?

means that when it does math on the sound it uses 16 bit resolution, but for storage and playback it's 12 bit.
