Overheating Question..

Ive noticed that when I turn my 3000 on, the MPC does heat up very quickly within 10 minutes of use.. I was wondering is this usual, as Ive only really noticed this recently?

Also ive recently upgraded the memory and not removed the stock memory and was wondering, is it crucial that I remove the stock memory?

Removing the stock memory board after fitting new SIMMS will reduce the current draw on the MPC3000 power supply board.

This will reduce the heat a bit.

Also ... make certain your MPC3000 is running on the correct voltage for your territory.

Too high an input voltage can make the MPC3000 run hot.

Position an operational desk fan near the MPC3000 cooling vents to blow air around and reduce heat even further... if necessary.

its fairly normal. just keep the room ventilated and turn the lcd screen off when the mpc is 'idle'.

Rohans Suggestions come from the Technical angle...and are totally sound in their content!!!

In addition, from 'MY' experience, i keep a fan trained on the vented area of my machine & this helps alot!!! I've had my MPC turned on for weeks at a time like this with no problems!!!

This is just from my own perspective & experience so is by no means a Bible-Truth Fix....

In addition to my previous comments ....

I forgot to mention.

If your machine is expanded with 32 meg of RAM via SIMMS then the AKAI EXM board will be mapped out of action by the operating system.

In other words ... it won't be much good leaving it installed.

i was just gonna post something similar to this as i just moved into a bigger apt. this weekend and am finally able to put all of my gear into my bedroom. so i bought a new standing lamp w/ 3 independent fixtures of which i will now use one of the bulbs directed onto the LCD screen so i can read it perfectly without having to squint! this lamp is right next to the 60 which is sitting on top of the s950, about 3 or 4 feet away from the 60.

60w standard bulbs.

my quesions are:

1) will the heat produced by the s950, or the fact that i have my 60 sitting on top of the s950, potentially cause damage to either unit?

2) i notice the bulbs produce a substantial amount of heat. with the bulbs being so close to my equipment, do i risk any damage to either the electronic components OR paint/graphics?

i do have a standing, oscillating 16" fan in my room which will be directed towards me and my gear while in use. should this suffice?

i am hoping to have all of my gear/furniture setup in a few days and take some pics to share for reference. i'd also appreciate any suggestions on changing the layout so as to prevent any problems in the future (i.e. i'm not sure about placement of my 10" floor speakers).

i remember asking about this a while ago in regards to the 2kxl having this as an option. can someone confirm if this is possible with the 60 and OS 3.10??? is there really this sort of 'sleep mode' option available?

probably nothign major, but heat is the major cause of circuit failure, so I'd try and arrange it so the 950 has its vents unhindered and the 60 doesn't have heat all around it like that.

just get a backlight, you'll thank me later. much better for your eyes than the lamp thing, and much more convinient. just get the backlight replaced, it's not that pricey.

Design it in the most ideal way you can since you now have the room.

thank you, elmac. there is venting space of about 1/2" - 1" between the s950 and the 60 from the 60's little plastic feet. i will have to borrow a digi cam soon and post up detailed pics.

did you ever post your setup in that studio environments forum?

i have an end table (60 & s950) and a printer stand (microKORG & mixer) that i'm using right now but was thinking i could maybe buy some strong shelves for the 60/s950 combo and some light-duty shelves for the korg & mixer to help build up instead of taking lateral space. cuz i was also thinking about getting some floormats so i can easily slide over from turntables to production equipment to PC in one "L" type floormat (carpet flooring makes it hard to roll around)

i'm just curious as to how you've got your lil' studio setup. i watch HGTV sometimes and always wonder what it'd be like to do a production studio style show of 'trading spaces' or 'while you were out'!!! that'd be crazy wouldn't it! you go off to run some errands and come back to find your studio HOOKED the fuggup! or, it could be jacked dafuggup too i suppose!!! haha!

just try different things, the 950 can probably chill there, but i prefer to have it above like how Something like that has his set up above the 60. make sure whatever you have it on is sturdy enough to pound on yaknow.

it's actualy a Puma, cougar, mountain lion, (lots of names) but it's black so it seems like a panther, which is cool by me.

my mpc60 was modded to have a button on the right side panel to kill the backlight which will save the backlight as its not always necessary.
