How can I tell what key/note a sample is?

say I sample a bass stab from a double bass off a record. To help me get all the instruments into the same key, could I use a instrument/guitar tuner to tell me what note it is?

yeah I guess you could. I usually don't worry about that stuff though. I don't even see why people want to pitch sounds all the way up and down. Most of the time the pitches I get from the 16 levels function is good enough for what I want to do with the sound.

imo its not really worh it ... i have tried the tuner of my korg guitar fx sometimes but it aint useful on most samples ... mine is esp. weak on basses. i think basses are just too deep to be tuned by it (my tuner freaks up and down like crazy on basses). maybe a bass tuner would work better ...

if at all, then my tuner worx on some midrange long sustained non looped sounds but on most sounds its of no help ... like say i expected it to be useful when i tried to tune a multisampled piano but again it was of no help ... dunno why but probably piano sounds are too short to be tuned by it ... forget about looped samples to be tuned by my korg - it freaks my tuner in an unpredidtalbe way ... so dunno - maybe some other tuners work better but i gave up on mine completely ... and to tune my shit i either use an initial sound at my viurs or some piano ... and actually i think that tuning by ear is a great musical exercize and best anyways ...

i was thinking about the same thing. i think you can use a tuner but it needs to be a chromatic one so you have all the notes, not just the ones guitar strings are.

as i plan on buying one i have a 'technique' i use for the moment. i use an XL but i think it you can do the same thing on a 3000 (not on a 60 because it doesnt have a LPF).

u need your main sample and your bass sample and assign the to 2 diff pads. the one with the bass sound need to trigger both pads so if you press the bass pad the 2 sounds will play. now u set the filter of both pads verry low 0-10 and start tuning the bass up or down. when you start hearing fast fluctations (like and LFO) your getting close. u need to tune it untill the fluctuations slow down and eventually stop then your on the right key.

if you dont understand what these fluctuations are, just lood in 2 looped sine waves of a different pitch, do what i said and you will get it
