This past week I finally got to mess with a 60 MK1. I've never even seen one before let alone play with one. I had to drive like 2 hours away. This cat was advertising it for sale for like a grand, but then changed his mind. I was trying to offer 8 bills but he wasnt having it. It was fully maxed in mint as mint can get condition. I went anyway and when I first saw it I was underwhelmed. Not underwhelmed in a bad since, but from what I've read and heard especially on these forums I expected it to be huge, like the size of Dre's mixing console or something. It wasn't that big at all, about the size of an MV. This thing was so clean it looked brand new. Then he played a sequence and I almost hit the floor. The drums sounded so punchy and just so.... ALIVE. He was showing me around on it and I was very surprised to see it had actual zoning. The zoning was different in a sense that you had to have each sound copied to a pad, and then dial in numbers to chop it just right. Not that hard at all. The way elmacoco described it in this Forum's FAQ, I was extremely confused and thought it was a legnthy process of sampling air before samples and assigning the air to pads or something of that nature, but it wasn't like that at all. I finally got a chance to mess around on the pads, and I don't know if it was just his MP 60 or what, but they were some of the softest pads I've ever felt on a drum machine. They felt like little pillows. And I don't know if there's a difference in swing amongst the different machine's, but I do think the quantize is better on the 60. I don't know which quantize he had it on, but no matter how hard I tried to play the dumbest rhythm and try to get it offbeat, it was impossible. This isn't necassarily true of the newer MPC's where whatever quantize setting I got it on, I can make it sound just a little offbeat if I tried. The 60 reminded me of my old Roland TR-626 that I first started on. The 60 also had this button next to Tap Tempo if I remember correctly called Timing Correct. Homeboy was doing some nasty double bass hits with that. The little armrest was nice too and I felt free to usethat often. All in all, it was a pretty hot little machine that was most importantly FUN to use. I 'm going to see if I can hit him up in a week or so again so I can come and play on it some more. I think I might just bum off his 60 for a little while 
. I was trying like hell to get him to sell it to me, but he said he doesn't know what he was thinking when he posted the ad and he just couldn't part with. He said he traded his 2KXL back in the day for it in Boston somewhere. I needed something desperately to try and quantize my drums on the Motif so I had to break down and settle for a 2000 Classic Studio Plus 
. I guess that will do. I'm interested in playing around with a 3000. Those I've seen before, but I've never got to mess with one. Oh well, all's well that ends well
