let's see..

-main outputs, the 8 outs, rec in, make sure there's no crackling sound.
-pads, velocity response
-all the buttons
-sample, assign to all the 16 pads, make sure you got no dead sensor in one of the pads.
- contrast on the backlight
- volume/turning button , no loose feel
- saving/loading on disk/zipdisk

and finally let him pop the trunk, check the cables/P.C. boards

is there a diagnostic screen you can get up? I remember seeing something like that in the service manual

Yes, but you have to have the "Service" disk to run those tests. I've asked alot of people about it and nobody seems to have it - or those that do don't want to give it up. Hopefully in the future somebody will get it into the 60 community.

twats, Can't they just copy the data and upload to the internet? Failing that copy the disk to someone who can upload?
