differences between mpc 60 and mpc 60 mrk II

hello all

i am an mpc 2000 user and i have seen an mpc 60 for sale.

what i really want to know is what the differences are between the mpc 60 and the mpc 60 mk II.

the other thing i need to know is what type of questions should i ask the seller...e.g. how much memory, what operating system etc.

you see i do not know enough about these machines to know what should be looking for and therefore need the guidance of seasoned pros.

Differences are cosmetic only, i think the mk2 got a headphone jack, but the mkI got the leather wrist wrest, its the 78 Cadillac DeVille of drum machines.

besides that just make sure you get OS 3.11, if it has that it also means it has maxed out memory. If not expect to shell out $200 for the update. The zip option is a bonus but i dont need it personally, i work 1 program/sequence per disk or two.

1. I think 2.5 megs or something, this will give you 26 seconds of sampling time which is a lot if your sampling everything at 45rpms.

2. Not that i can see, I use my mixers headphone jack anyhow.

Max memory is 1.5 mb. (25 secs) Standard memory is around 750kb. If you have OS 3.10 there is a double compression mode that gives you double the sample time. (52 secs if you have maxed out memory)

OS 3.10 doesnt mean you have maxed out memory.
OS 3.10 does mean you are set to go to install SCSI.

Again....as DOVESKI said, thats a lot if you sample at 45 rpm. The MK2 is not sexy like the original one. The MK2 has a headpone out... the Original one does not. The Original is built like a tank. I love the way it opens up....with hinges on the back. It makes for easy maintenance.

so can you have 1.5mb of memory without having os 3.10?

can you please provide a brief description of the technique of sampling at 45rpm

You can have 1.5 MB w/out OS 3.10, but you will not have 26 seconds of sample time. It will be more like 5 seconds 10 at most.

This is not true (entirely). Without 3.10 you can upgrade to 1.5 mb. You will have 26 seconds of sample time. You will be limited to 5 seconds sample time per pad.

With OS 3.10 you there is a compression mode that will double your sample time. With 1.5 mb memory this mode will give you 52 secs of sample time. The 5 second per pad limit will be gone. One pad can have a sample as big as your memory allows.

the stock mpc60/mpc60II comes with only 750kb of RAM/memory which will give you 13.1 second sample time total! but without OS version 3.10 you have a 5 second limit on any one sample, but you can upgrade the RAM/memory another 750kb to make it 1.5mb total RAM which will give you 26.2 seconds of total sample time but you will still be limited to 5 seconds for each individual sample unless you have installed the 3.10 OS which changes the 5 second sample limit so that you can use all available memory on one individual sample!(13.1 secs with 750kb, 26.2 secs with 1.5mb installed) any other sounds sampled into memory will subtract from this sample time available of course! also when sampling without the 3.1 OS installed, any memory being utilized by SEQUENCE data will be erased when you sample a new sound... so that means if you dont have operating system version 3.10 that you must save any SEQUENCE data to disk before trying to sample additional sounds.... if you have the OS version 3.10 installed on your MPC60/MPC60II it will not give you more memory, but in regards to the memory, it will let you sample new sounds without losing the SEQUENCE data(which will of course put a limit on your sample time depending upon how much memory is being taken up by SEQUENCE data) and use all available memory for any individual sample!!!(no 5 second limit with OS version 3.10) also, included in the 3.10 OS is a compression feature which will compress a sample into half the memory size of the original sample but you will lose a little bit of high frequency sound quality!!! so if this compression feature is used to its full potential you can have a total of 52.4 seconds of sample time if you have upgraded the RAM to a full 1.5megs.... im hoping this clears things up for you... imma noob to the mpc but i do know a few things!

im pretty sure that the newest OS available for the mpc60 is 3.10e which is the one that ROGER LINN is selling on his website.. im not sure but i think that there may be a 3.11 OS for the mpc3000, but not for the mpc60! also... the updated OS will not give you any expanded memory other than the compression function... memory upgrade and OS upgrade are 2 different things!!!

Quite true. Find one with SCSI, 3.10e, and 1.5 mb ram... and you will be fully upgraded. Then you will have no worries....like myself.
