Okay, most of them barely sound like drums (actually most of the sounds are just generated using white noise), but there's something about these early attempts to create a virtual drummer that is a bit addictive. Go to the Keyboard Museum's Virtual Playground and then click on the drum machine you want to audition. The selections range from the 1968 Seeburg Select-A-Rhythm to the ELI Computer Rhythm CR-7030 of the 1970s to more recent beat boxes like the MXR 185 of 1986. But what's really cool is that you can actually select patterns, set the tempo and tweak some of the actual samples. All this comes courtesy of Joseph Rivers, who obviously went to an incredible amount of effort to locate the original boxes, sample the sounds and finally create an on-screen graphic that duplicates the look and feel of these vintage drum machines. So click on that cheesy Fox Trot, Rhumba, Bossa Nova, Cha Cha, Mambo, "Go-Go" or Teen Beat. It's guaranteed to make you smile!"
