MPC 60 mkII Arrived! Problems!!

Ok so my mpc60 mkII arrived today.

These problems exist:

1. Power Connector on back of unit cracked/broekn off at mounting screws. Need to replace if I decide not to return unit. Seller shipped mpc w/ cord plugged into back of the unit. (Idiot!) $25 part from forat. Need to solder and shrinkwrap. Any advice/input?

2. Volume knob creates temporary static/distortion while turned up/down in the lower volume ranges. Contact cleaner should most likely allieviate this issue, correct? Any input?

3. Data wheel needs inspection. Works ok but sometimes wont click. Any input or advice on service/repair? Forat suggested gluing knob to the black piece on inside and onto the mechanism. Any advice/input?

Sampling and outputs seem to operate fine. I will do further testing tonight.

I have not got to test the disk drive because I dont have any DS/DD disks. Can i use newer 1.44" floppies some how?

I will be getting into the manuals and threads soon but wanted to get the ball rolling on my issues here.

Tape over the hole on the right side of the floppy, the right side as you insert the disk into the floppy drive, notthe hole without the little slider (which is the copy protect hole).

Get a repair quote from Forat, and tell the seller he needs to pay for the repair or you will have to return him the MPC. They don;t want a broken MP back that they just got rid of, so they will most likely agree to a reasonable settlement.

Tell them that it is their responsibility as the shipper to file a claim with Fedex or whoever they shipped it with so they can later get reimbursed for the money they give you to pay for the repairs.

Not saying you should definitely return it though, only the power supply thing sounds major, the rest of the stuff sound easy to fix.

Wow i wouldnt have even thought of that, thats a good idea.

If you decide to keep it though:

1. If its just the socket, not embedded into a power supply, you can buy them for cheap off mouser, never seen inside a 60 though so i dont know.

2. Yeah HOSA makes a really good pot cleaner, which i reccomend using on any used gear you buy, they also make a contact cleaner for jacks as well which helps alot on used gear.

3. Depends on the type of data wheel. Probably just forats advice would be right.

Ok well I contacted the seller and am waiting for a reply.

The power connector is busted from the mounting but that would be a relatively easy fix. Forat said he could send me the piece for $24. The power cable socket is a simple fix. I opened the mpc and it seems simple enough, its not embedded into the powersupply.

1. Volume knob is now fixed. Used contact cleaner and brush tip to remove fuzz and gunk from switch. No more static.

2. Data knob seems to work fine now after using contact cleaner and re-seating the knob.

3. Disk drive appears to work fine. I could format, load, and save to a floppy using tape on the hole trick. (Thanks Simon)


Now some new quirks/issues have been discovered though...

Backlight doesnt work, which wasn't expected, but.. an electronic "whine" is being produced from the unit. I recall hearing something about an inverter being a common cause for this. Its not obnoxious per-say, just a high frequency. Is it an easy fix for someone who knows how to solder, if it turns out to be the inverter?

Also, vent above power supply gives a very faint solder-like smell if you take a whiff right on the vent. When I was checking to see if unit was at a reasonable operating temp I noticed this. Common, or not?

I also discovered so far was that the headphone out produces a soft underlying hummmm but pronounced "air-like" or fuzz sound out the speakers when at mid to full volumes. What most commonly causes this? Also, the record input is bleeding into the headphone out when Hear input is set to off. But not on the stereo outs or assignable outs. The stereo outs as well as assignable out seem to sound crystal clear.

I am contemplating whether to get full refund or fix it.... hrmmmmm i will contact forat tomorrow.. bummer...

OK. So during more testing last night. I fell in love with this machine. Its been neglected and I am gonna keep it. Cosmetically its in pretty darn good condition. I ordered a backlight from telesis gear (Dude was more than helpful! I recommend him!). Gonna order the power connector from forat today also.

Seller refunded me for parts/repairs. Sweet...
