Memory Hack Job

So I finally took my MPC to get looked at and the outcome was less than good. When we opened it up, we discovered that the previous owner of it did the hack job version of the memory upgrade as seen here http://blog.retrosynth.com/archives/2006/01/do_it_yourself.html

instead of the proper one. To make a long story short, the place doesn't mess with mods so I am left to fix it myself or just deal with only 13 seconds of sampling time b4 weird noises kick in(Its just like having that SP1200 I wanted ) . Hopefully its just bad soldering or something stupid.

13 secs is plenty to make good beats remember it's not the machine it's the person. Get creativity if anything it's gonna help you in the long run but you could fix it yourself it's not that hard you just need to get the original Memory Expansion.

Its not really the 13 seconds thats bothers me cuz I originally was gonna grab an SP which has 10. It's more the fact that I bought the machine with 26. Ah well, I'll just deal with it for now and find a way to reverse this hack.

are you getting the weird noises after you desoldered the hack job or while it is in place?

just curious because my mpc came with the hack job and it makes weird noises with the hack in place, but not with the wires desoldered

The hack is still in place. Im thinkin I might actually just redo the hack myself since its only cost like 20 bux to do. But for right now I just gotta keep an eye on how much time I use and strategically save my samples to disk. Once I kick out a few more beats, then Ill fix that ish. I would like to just get the proper upgrade but its gotta be a **** to undo the dbl stacked chips, then desolder the IC sockets just to get back to square 1.

Maybe this is the same problem I'm having. When I sample more than 750KB I get ugly distortion over the sounds loaded after the 750 mark. I'll have to look to see if I have the hacked mod. If I end up needing to replace the memory expansion, will I need to reinstall 3.10? I don't have the original discs.

3.10 OS is on ROM Chips not some program disk

i think you can leave the chips in as long as they arent connected via wires to the correct spots that allow the hack to work.
if they are still attached, they wont be used because nothing is connected to them.

I opened my 60II up today and, sure enough, the $20 ghetto hack was installed. I put the machine back to stock and I'm ordering a legit exp board from Forat. I think there are serious problems with the cheap mem expansion hack. Anybody have a hacked 60 that works correctly?
By the way, BlueDrink, if you do decide to reverse the hack, put aside some time to do it--it's a pain in the ***.

That's pretty normal if you running the hack. What do you expect for doing a rig job for almost nothing.

A previous owner installed the hack in my 60, and I didn't know the hack was in place when I purchased it. Sounds like the same thing happened to BlueDrink and lumin. So as a message to anyone thinking about performing the hack--DON'T DO IT!--save yourself the hassle (it requires a lot of precise soldering), and pay the extra $100 for the legit expansion. And if you're thinking about buying a 60, do everything you can to make sure your MPC doesn't have the hack installed.

yeah if you end up buyin a 60, especially off of ebay, make sure you get a pic of the inside of the machine before you buy it. i found out about 6 months later that the hack was installed on mine.

where are you seeing the memory expansion for $100?

Well it's $135 from Forat + $10 shipping. I was trying to say that it's about $100 more than it costs to do the hack. Plus I think the board takes about 10 minutes to install instead of 2-3 hrs for the hack.

man,to tell you the truth,these machines should never have "hack" jobs.if you love your equipment, like i do, and you spent your hard earned money on it,like i did, then just do things the right way.it pays off in the end.plus everything will look and work better in the long run. just my opinion tho.

Got the expansion board from Forat yesterday. Installed it and everything works perfectly.
