Help testing an MPC 3K for the first time?

Greetings.
I found an MPC3K at a pawn shop and want to test it out before I buy it.
The guy there says it works and it powers up, but what is the best way to test its functions? I think it has OS 3.03. It does not come with any discs.
I can score this thing for cheap, but I don't want to buy broken gear.
Any ideas?

You need to try to sample something into it an then put it on 16 levels and test each pad and make sure the backlight and screen works ok. If it has OS 3.03 it better be cheap cause that OS is terrible.

see if you can download some akai kits in .snd format and save them on a floppy then load the up and listen to the sounds on each individual output, stereo outputs, mix out, and the headphone jack.

If you own a SCSI zip, take the zip, scsi cable, and power supply and a blank zip disk to see if the SCSI port works.

I guess mess with the contrast screen. Mess with the sliders to see if they funtion. Check to see that all the pads and buttons are responsive.

A1 and A2 (buttons) require some pressure cause those get used frequently and wear out a little.

If you own a tone generator or something that outputs noise w/out needing a preamp, take it and sample it through the 1/4" input on the 3k then play with trimming samples, triggering that sound from pads, and route that sound through all 8 outputs, stereo outs and mix out.

Thats what I would do to make sure everying functions.

I don't have a floppy drive, unfortunately, so I can't just take a sample disc with me. No ZIP drive either.
Where can I find the best tutorial to quickly and easily learn to sample with it?
I have never used an MPC before.
Will I need to take a disc with me to test the sampling? Does it require a specific type?

If everything is working, is it easy to upgrade the OS? Or do I have to replace an expensive chip?

If you don't know how to use it you should try to find a friend who does or something. To change the OS you can download Rohan's 3.16 to a floppy and load it every time you start the MPC or just buy his OS 3.50 Valixi upgrade.

My only other friend with MPC knowledge lives in Seattle and cannot help.
And I don't have a floppy disc drive on my computer.

I am reading the manual online, but it is complicated without the machine in front of me. Is there another quick start tutorial out there that I can print and take with me? Sampling the sound seems easy, but after that I am a bit lost on how to test the other functions.
