Drum hits...

Yo peeps,

I find it really hard to get those single hits.

I go crate digging and get alot of disco records.. sample separate hits... tune them down abit but still dont get that hip hop sound.

So just wanted to ask am i sampling from the wrong records to get those hip hop drums?

Should i be putting breaks over the top of my beat to beef it up?

Im knew to the whole thing so just thought id ask for some help.

layering too much drums can destroy the sound.
try to eq and compress your sounds also/instead.

another point: not every sound that you sample is dope. my ratio is like 1 dope sd out of 15-20... (but i also sample cheap stuff like german volksmusik or 80s dance where many drums sound the same).

The only trick I know for layering drums is to think of them as part of a 3 band EQ. If you want a fat but still quite clear kick all you have to do is to layer one bass kick with a very defitive kick but with low body. If you try to layer to kicks with strong bodies you will end up with a distorting one. Also, take care of the leves of the layers. You can't just layer drums while all are playing on 100% of their volume. Something has to stay in the back.

search for real good drummers (cobham is a start) and sample clean hits, sample at highest possible without clipping!!! layer snares with hand claps(simul function).. use swing on kick track (yes separate tracks for each drumsound).. thats workin for me but im sure many people have another angle on drums SO SHARE YOUR S4IT !!!

It just means to sequence more than one sound in the same place so as to give it a stronger sound... like maybe two different snares that are placed in the same place in the sequence and play at the same time. The same sound tapped in twice in the same place sounds like cr@p... unless they are mixed separately... I dont do it much.
