I'm totally fascinated by the normalize function.
I imagine that it translates any sound into an MPC sound.

All a normalise function does is to boost or lower the volume if the entire waveform based upon the loudest measured peak of that waveform.
The quality of an overdriven waveform is usually based on the hardware + software qualities, the components used... and pre or post-processing, compression, etc, etc. e.g. overdrive a snare through an Allen & Hetah GS3 mic channel, then compare that to overdriving the same snare through a software plugin, then compare that to overdriving a sound card... or the S950 input. Then do you eq before and/or after overdriving the sound... do you put some effects on before or after... do you parallel compress or layer with another sound.
There are many ways boost your sounds. Normalising is not what I meant.
Tools and choices.. it's what makes our sounds individual.
Soft clip, hard clip, make other sounds duck when your kick and/or snare hits... maybe put your reverb/delay effects through a group bus that ducks with the kick.. then mix that back in to your stereo mix, etc, etc. Many ways to boost sounds and shape/mould your mix.
