I picked up Deoxit D5 to do some contact cleaning on two MPCs (1000 & 2000XL). The 1000 was purchased back in '05 when they first came out and I figured it was a good time a decade later to open it up and clean it out aside from occasional dusting over the years.

The 2000XL had a liquid spill a while back and after cleaning with alcohol I wanted to make sure there would be no oxidation problems. Both machines also had slight tact switch and potentiometer issues which was the main reason to open them up.

After cleaning the faders out and knobs and tact switch buttons I gave each of the boards a tiny spray then mopped up the excess as best I could with q-tips. 24 hours later I'm unsure if I should turn them on or go back into them and use more alcohol to get rid of the greasy coat the Deoxit leaves.

Anyone have experience using this spray and if it's safe to have a slight residue on the PCB?

My main goal aside from general cleaning was also to have some kind of "oxidation preventative" measure or "general protective treatment" but I feel like I may have went about it the wrong way by spraying the boards.

Just always keep in mind, only a small amount of DeoxIT® should to be applied to the metal surface. More is NOT better. You do not need to make sure DeoxIT® gets onto the entire metal surface. If you missed a little, DeoxIT® will migrate and coat the metal surfaces that were not treated. Also, even if you were only able to treat the connector and not the socket, DeoxIT®, once part is connected, will migrate over to the socket and treat the exposed metal. This is one of the best attributes of DeoxIT®. Becomes very important on moving connections or ones subject to vibration.

Yea, they make different products for different applications. At the time I wasn't paying too much attention to this. It's kind of hard to spray this stuff into the tact switch buttons without it getting everywhere, should have used a pen or needle applicator but after using q-tips and alcohol I was able to get all the gunk off.
