Roland VP 9000 - what do ya think?

Never heard bout that sampler

Not a replacement for a 'normal' sampler.

Only 6 voice polyphony (stereo samples use 2 voices) and 6 part multitimbral.

Samples have to be encoded, not just recorded in, and due to the encoding, end up larger than they normally would be (1.7 times the size).

Maximum sample time is 25 seconds in stereo, 50 seconds in mono.

It was their first sampler with VariPhrase, which was used later in the VariOS module, and the V-Synth/V-SynthXT (and maybe limited versions in the MC808 and MV8000/8800).

No I don't have one. I have the V-Synth. It is inside the vsynth in a better format.

I have owned a few of these.


the way i used was for chopped up drum breaks.

i chopped all my best breaks with this beast and used it as a drum module.


very effective.

I think this is interesting because of real time time stretch function. I dont need 6 voice polyphony etc.
But i think the sound of this sampler is not so interesting after my mpc60, sp1200, s950..

I have one and if you expand the ram to 136mb. You get 14 minutes mono or 7 minutes stereo sample time.

So, you can record/load a single 14 minute mono or single 7 minutes stereo sample into it?

Sorry Simon, I think I misquoted you. My manual say the maximum time for a single sample is 25 second stereo, or 50 second mono and it's not possible to create sample that is longer than these time. Like you said before.

It also says adding 128MB simms to 8MB installed. You will be able to sample total of approximately 7 minutes stereo, or 14 minutes mono.

So I guess it will take a whole lot of samples to max the ram out. I haven't touch my vp9000 in so long I forgot how it setup.

That's Roland for you. There products always gives you great features and limitation at the same time.

All good, I wasn't clear enough, I should have said 'maximum single sample time' or 'maximum time per sample'.

I was wondering if maybe they updated the OS to overcome the limitation, and I missed it.

He is in Europe, so might have a 230-240VAC version, which would need a step-up transformer to operate on US mains power.

Is there any akai/e-mu sampler with real time time stretch function?
