Elektron Analog Rytm - 8 voice analog drum machine with samp

From what ive seen/heard its like the tempest with importable samples.Doing nothing for me so far.

So far I've put two hours of play on mine and here's some things to note.

The pads feel like ableton push pads. Those took some time and breaking in to become more expressive and I hope this to be the same.

The presets as of OS 1.10 with the addition of the FM kick and FM Snare also sound good. It's easy to make Tr-esque sounds with minimal tweaking.

The filters sound smooth and can make the sound 'creamy' at times.

I have not messed with sampling engine. I have not messed with the compressor or distortion.

The sequencer is fairly easy to get even if you came from MPCs. I was able to write the two bar loops that I'm used to at 92.0 bpm without any issues. I made it swing the way I'm used to.

The amp envelope sounds good too.

Well.....................after drinking a few cups of coffee yesterday morning me and my credit card took a trip into town and i swooped on a RYTM.Long time since i brought something new!!!!!!!Spent last night making 2 bars loops too.Got some interesting results.Nearly gave up on it at one point but after listening back i went in again for more.I think i might be addicted.Gonna load some of my own samples today.Will post something also : ]

With all the hype, expectations, guilt, bias, effects, samples, features, etc., turned off...how good/bad do the analogue drum sounds sound?

Ill have a listen to the basic tone tonight.Its a complex beast in a way.All elektrons are fiddly.Anyways heres a couple of the first 2 bars of AR i mustered up-

hey dryad, can you load sample chops in this thing and use it similar to an mpc?
i know the sequencer would take some getting used to, but do you think it would lend itself well to mpc style sampling?
ie, 1 shot melodic samples/ crossfade loop mode type shit?

or is it more of a "load one sound, and make it chromatic," type of sampler?

are there any mute groups or anything like that?

how many samples can you load at a time? are there banks or anything similar, so you can switch between one set of samples and the next?

I don't know max amount of samples but you can use the samples like an MPC

1. Use the c6 software to transfer the samples
2. Start a project and grab the samples you need
3. Select a pad.
4. Press the synth knob twice to turn off the drum synth but leave on sample playback
5. Press the sample knob twice to select sample for pad.
6. Press the sample knob again to raise sample volume for use. By default sample volume is 0.
7. Press the selected pad and you can now play the sample and adjust start/stop points. You also have access to all the other parameter knobs with the sample.

The sample engine is like a phrase sampler.

I'm buying one of these next. I bought the tempest and while the sequencer is amazing.....I'm not feeling it that much. Too much drum synthesis and not enough making music

Also there is an iOS7 app coming out called STROM as a sample manipulation app you can link to the RYTM.

@dabblerobb The tempest now has a firmware feature where you can use it as a 6 voice synth on top of the drum synth.

All in all the RYTM is my favorite beat box at the moment because of how quickly i can change styles with the sequencer.

Voodoo are you using it alone or midi'd up to something else?

Right now I'm using it alone and recording my sequences into Ableton. I may eventually try to use the 2000XL or 60 to sequence my sounds. This machine cannot be used as an external sequencer to control the MPC.

I have a few questions I am weighing heavily on getting one of these;

1) it can play standalone with just the psu and a pair of headphones right? I kind of enjoy writing/banging out beats on the fly and being able to take the equipment into the living room from time to time..

2) how multi-purpose is the unit? can I load in some string sounds and utilize the 8 voices?( i know on the tempest this can work real well albeit 6 voices) not a deal breaker but certainly adds value.

3) Sequencing, is there any GUI to see where the sound is landing or is it locked into the steps-LCD/(plugin to come I know)?

1) I play it standalone with Bose companion speakers connected to the headphone jack and chill out on my bed sketching ideas. I use the ikea Brädä stand for it and that works fine. If I catch something on the fly I like I just record it into my Roland br864 multitrack unit.

2) besides a drum synth you can turn off the oscillators and just use it for sample playback. Again you are still limited to 8 voices like an sp303, but you have 12 pads and you can make voices cut each other off. Each sample slot voice you use will have its own filter with its own overdrive and LFO. The other good thing you can do is change the amp envelope, filter, and overdrive to morph the percussive sounds into some nice basses. The top row of pads builds sounds with 1 oscillator, the middle row uses 3 oscillators per a pad, and the bottom uses two oscillators per a pad. You can also drop the amount of oscillators to one oscillator per each pad on the last two rows.

3) I'm still learning the sequencer part. All I know is when you select the tracking function you can see where the sound hits 16 steps at a time. When I have more time I'll look into this.
