It's a Novation KS-Rack. A digital 4 part polyphonic synth. It sounds kinda thin but have a lot of possibilities to add some sound ambience.

ah has ok I never for on with Novation synths always found them somewhat cold and glassy sounding; I had the k-station way back and the bass station 1&2 but never kept any of them.

pretty much all the syths I had left me disatisfied so sold em all; th eonly ones kept is microkorg XL and the new pro-800 analog.

I love my S-2400, but I mainly use it as a plugin. I think it's because I work a lot faster with my MPC X, so whenever I want that aliased sound, I sample in the S2400 and then
quickly port the sample over to the MPC X. I desire to change this routine and release a few complete album projects using only the S2400; it's just a matter of mind over matter, I guess...

I'm using my MPC 4000 to sequence the S2400. Nothing wrong with the S2400 sequencer, particularly for its sample tracks, live loops but less so on the midi tracks. MPC 4k is such a comprehensive midi sequencer, and sampler. Mostly wanted 16 sampler outputs and to make the S2400 primarily for drums.

What I've learnt tho is how great the midi implementation is and loving using different midi modes on the S2400 with my MPC. For most one shots, percussion midi mode is the default but for playing pitches chromatically or playing slices done o the S2400 there are other modes. Works great with the MPC, getting a lot of mileage with this combo. Obviously the MPC can go further with polyphonic multi samples, modulation and effects.

I've seen a lot of these up for resale. Is the thrill gone? Why are so many people selling their s2400s?

I bought one on may. Thrill's still there for me! lol
I only see 6 on reverb and 8 on ebay worldwide.
They claim to have sell more than 3000 units, so I don't know if that counts as a great proportion, but I might be wrong.

Yeah, Pads are stiff, thou they can be easily configure for sensitivity and velocity curve etc. Maybe someone can make some replacement pads more like the mpc2k.

I'm planning to order S2400 this weekend (still debating on the color, probably will go with black) and have some questions, maybe you guys can share your opinions (I'm coming from MPC 1000 + JJOS2XL):
* is the software mostly complete in your opinion? any glaring bugs still not addressed?
* how's the workflow and speed?
* would you say that the S2400 is simpler and/or more immediate than MPC + JJOS?
* anyone switched fully to S2400? is it doable? I'd possibly use Logic for effects and final polish.

If you have anything else to share I'm all ears.

I’ve been able to do everything I wanted to do and not run into bugs.

Just like everything else, get used to it and it’s fine.

Not simpler than an mpc. More immediate, no.

First of all, white is shiny and black is matte. Fingerprints are more noticeable in the black one, the cream color of the white is why I chose it.

I would say it is.

I have one bug that bugs me, pun intended, but is minor and not workflow breaking. In fact I didn't notice it untils some1 in the isla forum pointed it out.

For me is very straight forward. And once you get it is lightning fast

I would say is simpler and faster, but then again you've been using the MPC so as it is different, you will have to adapt. Get the MPC out of your mind and start with a white canvas. Don't try to think in MPC ways, I mean.

I mostly only use the s2400 nowadays. I use to pair it with the 404 for FX, but straight out of the s2400.

One more question guys as this is not fully clear to me - how do you deal with lack of “automation” on S2400?

From what I understand only current parameters values are recorded and not their changes over time, so for example I can’t record a filter sweep or vocal pitch drop.

Going through the manual it seems that one way of solving this is bouncing a sample with automation first:

During the bounce process, any parameter changes made (e.g. filter sweeps)
will be baked into the bounced file.

And then using the bounced sample when recording a pattern. Less than ideal but seems workable

Is this the way to go?
