@jibber try both out with the same samples. Try to sample breaks with roughly the same panning on the left and right. If you really got time put both on a spectrum analyzer and see if there is still additional noise on the spectrum of the Y adapter. I don't have a resistor so I can't help you here. Just do simple references of a kick, snare, tom, hats. I predict that the kick and snare will be ok, but since there is already noise for the higher frequency stuff like hats and symbols there should be additional noise on those sounds.

I use my mixers aux sends (post fader) to sample on the s950 and mix the channels the way it sounds best to me. sometimes one of the channels sounds nice by its own, another time its good to have a small amount of the other channel mixed in. And sometimes both channels at the same level is best.
Most flexible solution but also the most timeconsuming cause you'll have to "search" what sounds best :)

Thanks for the input, i'll experiment a little what sounds best for me i think.

A friend came over and left something here for a few days... think i'll see what i can do with 20 seconds... :mrgreen:

The difference in colour between the white buttons on those two SP's is astonishing.

Ironically, beside the yellow buttons, his SP is in absolute mint condition. There is not ONE SINGLE scratch on that thing, not joking.

So here's a question for all you SP users out there:

How do you guys go about sampling a stereo source (records)?

In the beginning i've tried connecting a cable directly from the phono pre-amp and only use the left or right cable / channel. I didn't like this very much since i always fear i might be missing something from the other channel (some records that have hard panned stuff going on), call it a pet hate of mine, but i want to have both channels combined into mono.

As a result i've always connected the phono-pre to a mixer and from there use the master out (mono) to connect to the SP sample input.

If i remember correctly, it's possible to make a special cable that combines L / R into a mono signal / cable? I'd like to try this i think, as i'm not sure i like the sound of a mixer between the phono-pre and the SP when sampling.

What has been your method of sampling with the SP? Please share. :smoker:


In fact listening to left and right channel separately may lead you to finding an unexpected samples/breaks/etc. Like some records have drums on one channel or some instruments may be hard panned etc.

Sometimes if I want to combine both channels i'll throw in into my 2500 first and + the channels together. Same if I need to filter out additional bass frequencies I'll throw the bass through the LPF on the 2500 and then run it back into the SP or the 950 and use the LPF again.

I used it together with an ASR-10 and will do that again soon (broken, getting fixed). IMO it's a great combo. The SP is good for drums and occasional sample, ASR for stereo samples (and it simply sounds great to sample vinyl, some say they sprinkled fairy dust over them in the factory). :-D

The good thing is it sounds like Finesse not some thrown together tracks no one wanted.
Most of the time unreleased tracks that are later released tend to let you know why they were unreleaased.
