Hi all,
just got this unit from someone who hadn't turned it on in like 15 years.

It powers up and the 7 segment display comes on but instead of displaying 0 it looks like random segments of it are lit (different every time I power the unit up). The unit in general seems "drunk" with buttons like Record that respond but don't stay lit, or the disk drive sometimes spinning sometimes not...

I found a copy of the service manual online here: part1 and part2

First thing I checked was the power supply PCB, and in appearance, it looks like everything is ok; no bulging caps or burnt resitors.

Secondly I checked the voltages on the PSU pcb and they seem to be way off from what they're supposed to be... I assume that since the voltages are wrong at PSU level the problem must be (or at least originate) there (correct? :hmmm: )

Could the caps have failed even if they don't show it? Any other suggestion as to what I should check next?

Thanks!

First check for dry joints under the pcb (caps, regulators) and re-flow the solder if they look a bit dodgy.
Then check voltage regulator pins (don't short em. Very easy to do!).
Make sure the problem is coming out of the regulator and not going into the regulator from elsewhere... e.g. a bridge rectifier.
I.E. trace the problem to the broken part or PCB trace.
I recently had weird stuff happening with an old Hohner RDM1000 and it turned out to be a dodgy bridge rectifier which fed a regulator. I always thought that they just shorted but nah, replaced it and my machine now behaves properly with no sporadic power issues.

I also replaced a regulator recently that was spitting out a fair bit less than it should have been.
Be careful around that power supply too m8.
