emu e5000ultra dicussion

Recently piked up one to go with my current set up (mpc 2000 and eps 16) as I needed another dedicated sampler with more sampling time. I use the mp for sequencing and drums and the eps for everything else well mayb not everything but w/e. I'm incorporating the emu on the fly very basically as I don't have time right now to get in deep learning another sampler. I'm just interested in hearing from cats that have one or had one and their thoughts, opinions etc.. just sort of a general discussion on it. I'm sure a thread exists , mea culpa for not using the search on this yet but I figured was an opportunity to mayb update and give people a chance to chime in on this sampler. Not to mention this board has been a bit dead and repetitive as of late. Thanks in advance to anyone taking time to respond.

They are very good samplers, with plenty of modulation/filter/etc. capabilities, and a different sound to the standard clean/sterile Akai sampler sound, very deep and full featured samplers.

I had the E64 in the 90s and it was a beast. I really liked the sound but more than that I liked the user interface. I found it so much more logical and easier to handle than the AKAI OS on (for example the s3000). I never used or heard the 5000ultra but the OS structure should be the same than my old e64.
Trust me. Its worth using time to learn this machine.

^yah im pretty sure all the e series are pretty much the same prob differ in areas such as max ram, number of voices, max outs avaible and so on. So far i like it quite a bit, very intuitive, ive never worked on the s series so i cant compare, but if u know ure way around a sampler its ez to figure out the basics on this one. The modulation possibilities are very nice. Im going to have it for awhile so will def get to know it as time goes on. Ive wanted an emu piece for my setup for awhile, just seems fitting to have an akai, an ensoniq and an emu, next ive got my eye on a yamaha a4000 or a5000 but ill have to wait a bit.

Grrrrreat machine. I used to make loads with that machine. Sold it a few years back, then bought my old one back. Haven't used it that much since, but every now and then, I fire it up and make a track…it's great. The user interface is dope, and I've always found it slightly warmer than Akais – a wee bit less punchy than Akais but definitely not bad at all. Somehow pads and basses come out so great out of that machine.

Here's a song I did a year ago right after getting my E5000 Ultra back…I think it definitely has the EMU sound.

So I ve gotten thru the 400 page beast of a manual (ok so I skimmed thru a couple parts) , and decided to put my music making on hold for a bit in order to really get into this thing. Most of the features I'm already familiar with , perhaps not quite in this depth but still. One thing I am struggling with is finding an effective way of chopping samples on it. I have a method but with the time it takes I feel id almost save time chopping with the eps and then resampling each chop. I don't really expect anyone to take the time to share any methods they ve learnt but I thought id throw it out there in case someone has some time to kill. Mayb its just a convoluded machine to chop with or mayb I just need some time anyways any tips appreciated. But all in all its a beast of a machine and it is going to fit in perfectly with my current gear.

How about making multiple copies of the sample, then truncating each sample as desired? That's fairly quick when you get used to it.
I think I used to sample desired chops from my DAW into the EMU.
These days I've got a CF card reader, so I do the chopping on the laptop, then transfer the samples into the EMU by the CF card.

Thanks, yah I stayed up late last night and figured out how to do it quickly, I kept forgetting to switch back and forth between manage and edit, it is just a matter of practice. One thing I don't like tho is just that, in order to change the start point u have to truncate, seems u can't just set a non destructive start point that can b adjusted aft while the sequence is playing, or mayb I just havent figured it out yet, mayb with a cord set to modulate the start point. Its one of the things I liked about the eps, can make a loose chop and then tighten it up while the sequence is playing and I've made a decision on the pitch I want. I use a lot of samples with drums in em and it helps to have the freedom to nudge around the upbeats aft my initial chopping. But w/e I'm sure I'll figure a way around it. If that's the only downfall no biggie the other things this machine can do are well worth it. Thanks tho for responding.

You can definitely do it, probably with a cord.

It's 100 % adjustable by cord!

It's the "SStart" parameter you gotta have as destination.

Shit, I just started craving for some EMU action myself! It is a helluva dope sampler.

PS: Here's a handy tip…definitely useful when if you have a preset with lots of voices and you want to find a specific one (i.e., when you have chopped a break into many parts or just have lots of voices there in general).

Go to Preset > Edit.
When you hold Set/Shift and play a key from your keyboard/sequencer, the selection automatically moves to the voice you just played.

^ thanks for the tips and the resource, emusonacid seems pretty dead and unreliable these days, btw gyver what os r u running, mine is 4. 01 and I'm having difficulties finding 4. 02 4. 62 and 4. 7 I hear that's the order I need to upgrade in. If u know of any resources it d b appreciated, I've looked on emu site on emusonacid and other locations, gonna join that fb group and ask over there eventually bit I thought id throw it out here 1st. The best I could suggest is for you to join the FB group and ask somebody for the system disks (it takes a "flash prep" disk,which prepares the flash ROM for reading the OS disk – and then it takes the OS disk): thing is, I had 'em, and as I didn't need them anymore, I sent them to somebody on that group who needed them, and told him he should do the same once the need arises. He did. You could just join the group and ask if anyone has the disks.

You can probably get them off eBay UK, too (http://www.ebay.co.uk/sch/i.html?_odkw= ... k&_sacat=0).
That's what I did because couldn't think of anything else.
There is an application for creating the disks, but it takes an older PC with a floppy drive, obviously.

PS: I'm not sure but I dont think there's any certain order you need to do the upgrading. I'd go straight for 4.7. I think 4.7 was specifically made for RFX-32.
4.7 introduces a volume burst bug if you have the RFX-32, but even that can be avoided by very simple mixer settings.
I think you need 4.6 if you want .wav support (not 100% sure about this either but you can find the info on the net).
