I have floppys with vocals recorded on an Akai S-1000. I just realized my S-1000 does not turn on anymore. I can pick up an S-2800 for practically nothing but I need to know if it will be able to play the disks made on the S-1000.

Anyone?

In general the 2800 (and the whole 3000 series which the 2800 is part of) are backward compatible.
But when dealing with long samples like your vocal recording you should keep an eye on the memory of the 2800. The standard memory was 2MB and is expandable to only 16MB (ok I think there was guy on the net who managed to put 32MB into the 2800 but IDK.
So your 1000 probably have more memory than the 2800 you're about to buy.
Another drawback of the 2800 are the outputs. While the 1000 have Main L & R plus 8 individual outputs, the 2800 only have Main L & R plus 2 individual outs. It might not be a problem (I very rarely use the 8out expansion board of my MPC2000) but if you are used to use them on your 1000 then......
To be honest I wouldn't buy a 2800 no matter the price (ok for 20€ or at least 30€ I would think about it).

I recommend to get your 1000 repaired. If it just doesn't turn on it might be just the fuse which is really easy to fix (you can do this by yourself but keep yourself safe! please ask if you never done something like that before).

If you need some help with exporting content from the disks, myself, or possibly others might be able to lend a hand. I've been refurb'ing my S1000 recently and have swapped out to a USB Gotek drive, but I'd certainly be willing to swap it back in order to help a forum member out.

I agree with Peterpiper though, it's probably worth a quick check of the (three I believe) fuses, to make sure that they are functional before throwing in the towel there.

The S-2800 can read S-1000 disks. I think you may need to be on OS 2.0 to do it though.
