They're not bad at all, but don't abuse them because they break just looking at them wrong. Few years ago I bought the HM-300 cause I had just moved and my Boss HM-2 was in storage and I needed to jam. Sounds pretty much exactly like the Boss Heavy Metal, but the case is cheap plastic, it weighs nothing next to a real Boss heh. Worked great when I used it, but then I put it away for the last couple of years once my pedalboard came home. When I moved a year or two ago and setup my guitar rig, there was something moving around inside the pedal. It was stored in its original box, and was literally sitting on top of my Marshall cabinet the entire time it was put away. No one touched it, no one dropped it, it was in its box safe and sound. Somehow it broke on its own, and the switch is all **** now too, you have to bash the thing to turn it on and off. Once you get it on, still sounds just like a Boss HM-2 for $30 though!
