Similar sound to sp12 / sp1200

Forum for all other samplers & synths such as Maschine, MVs, Akai S & Z series, Roland, Korg, OP-1, analog synths etc.

i never thought the s950 or s900 sounded simlar to emu sp12 to be honest... sp12 really got a particular sound to the drums, which is why im looking for something like that..

I cant find an sp12 or 1200 anywhere for sale tho.. so im looking else where. I am tempted to get an s950.. but to be honest id rather an emu 12 or something with that type of sound..

I'll have to check those others out.. u sure the asr sounds like that? doesnt alchemist use an asr? coz that has a real small sound compared to the emu in my opinion (maybe smalls not the right word to use.. but maybe u get what u mean).

Emax is identical to sp1200

Only more sampling time. More stuff (analog chorus, analog envelopes) and you can transpose stuff.

E64 is more like house stuff.

To be honest i just listed all the samplers i would consider buying. S900 is great box, Not as vinyl as sp1200, or lofi but you can hear it work its shit on dre chronic.


I don't like dre very much but i love the cymbal sounds of the mpc 60.

Roland s330 could be option 12 bit magic. Has real analog filters. Used by liam howlett(w30).

Very underrated maybe. But yea now i have Emax i would sooner sell my body to Jahrome(actually probably just give up music instead) then go thru hassle of looking for another tone box.

there is nothing on this planet that sounds like an emu sp.


i have both samplers sittin here and can do some a/b if you wanna bet money on it.

Sampling times not really an issue.. id only want to use this piece im after for drums, maybe if its REAL short sampling time just to run samples through and into my s2000 to chop in that...

Yeah mpc 60 does sound nice, but then more pricey then what im looking for really, and for a bigger price id rather hold out and get an emu sp1200..

hahahah @ the jahrome comment, u wanna watch postin sh!t like that he'll flood ur inbox with requests.. I'll have to try check the emax out properly by sampling some of my records on it and seeing how it sounds incorperated with the rest of my set up.. im really looking for as emu sp12 tho id rather that then anything.. but if i cant get one for long enough i might just go with an s950 for the mean time if i find one nice price on ebay or some sh!t

To be honest not really.

I paid less then 100 notes for my emax. Has very similar design to sp1200.

I would be quite keen to hear the difference. But there is no way i would pay a grand for it.

To be honest i think the tone on the 2 machines is very much the same. Maybe the sp1200 comes out a bit phater as its set up for drums.

But i should think that the tone on the emax is very similar.

Also you can play stuff on an emax(melody's chords etc), and you cant do that on sp1200.

And also as i said the circuit design is very similar and the chips in the most part are the same.

basically emax sounds awesome.

Maybe you got a wack emax and a blistering sp1200. As its analog they can sound different.


Of course sp1200 is gonna sound a bit different. As for one you have every sound to its own output. Also it will have a compressor set inside it geared towards percussion.

However with emax you can still do drums and stuff. Just slide a Dbx over the main outs. Now thats a serious sound.
