Discuss Akai's iOS apps iMPC & iMPC Pro
By soulpower1234 Tue Aug 13, 2013 5:38 pm
Hi everyone I have started using the IMPC and really love it for drums and sampling purposes. What is the best way to send the sample to another Ipad app that has audiobus capabilities? What program for the IPad would you recommend? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

iMPC's lack of options is it's weakness.

The answer to your question is "you don't/can't" sadly.

It doesn't have Audiobus and I guarantee you it never will. Retronyms has their Tabletop app to host iMPC and due to that fact will forever refuse to utilize the Audiobus SDK.

Audiopaste is your best option here.

I have iMPC and it's a bit of fun, some of the sounds it includes are decent, but it's a toy compared to Beatmaker 2 and Nanostudio. And as you mentioned if it just had Audiobus support it would be easier to work around iMPC's limits.

I have like 200+ apps so feel free to PM me any questions about a certain app I may have it. And the Tablet app thread here is bursting at the seams with the best apps and posts from the iOS users on the forum here.

It's at 14 pages ATM, and Lampdog and I have posted mad screenshots of our favorite apps in there. I went so far as to post ALL my home screen and folders and describe how I had the style of apps on the screens.

Since we're on the topic of iMPC sounds and samples, is it worth the price of this app for just the drums and samples that this comes with?

People on the audiobus forum have been raving about them and just transporting the sound sets over to audioshare via i-funbox and using them with an app that's worth a damn.

I think a lot of the sounds, maybe all of them are legacy Akai sounds from old S Series CD-Roms and maybe some MPC pack in discs. It would explain that they are all nice and crispy, and I had serious deja vu's running through app.

For $3 on the phone version , you'd get your $3 worth on the sounds no question. Although personally I'd want a way to hack the WAV's out in one go, but I don't know the first thing about hacking or de-compiling an iOS app.

So Ocualr are these guys and this i-funbox the kind of hacking I described?

I have Audioshare and was thinking last night how I need to stop duplicating my samples in BM2, Nano etc.. so you've really got my attention.

i-Funbox will let you see the file systems for each app, no jailbreak necessary. So from what I've gathered all the wavs in iMPC are sitting in it's own folder within the app. Just connect your device to the desktop or laptop, i-Funbox will detect it and just drag and drop files to and from your apps. So, nope, no hacking involved. Of course not every app works this way as some devs like to hard code their extras right into the app itself.

I've read that the iphone app is missing the classic drums, while the ipad version has it all...

And for audioshare, BM2 is missing the "open in..." feature. So you would have to go with the ol' audio copy/paste routine which changes the file name into something generic. I've been meaning to start a thread over at Intua's forum to get them to add the "open in" function, but knowing Intua's general lack of response to these requests kicks my crippling cynicism into full gear. :Sigh:

Prior to Audioshare coming out I was using BM2 as my Audiopaste central spot as the folder system is so...normal.

I have the iPad iMPC and you've made my day on this i-Funbox thing.

I used to lurk at Intua in the BM1 days and when BM2 was the "Dretox" of the app world. But yeah, that's most reticent company next to MOTU, they don't answer stuff period.

But they came so hard on BM2 and the updates I just figured, hey if you're coding away with small team while not answering our questions and deliver like BM2 I'm not mad.

Intua gives no ****, but yeah you're right it's hard to get mad at them when they come correct 98 percent of the time.

I'm trying to make Audioshare into my main sample hub. Audioshare actually has it's own import/ export sdk for devs to incorporate in their apps. It's literally 3 lines of code so I'm hoping BM2 has it in the next update. There really is no excuse for it not to.

I'm about to do the same with Audioshare. If the SDK implementation is that simple, I agree everybody should jump on board.

That's good information Ocular and Metatron! I had almost forgotten about iFunbox. I used to use iFile on my jailbroken Ipad to move stuff around. I had to give up the jailbreak to upgrade to IOS 6.13 because I had to have it in order to run Nave. Nave was worth it though:)

One other thing you can do with Beatmaker though is utilize Dropbox. I copied all of the iMaschine files to Dropbox and now easily create kits in BM with the iMaschine samples (talk about no updates, they are the worst:(

Finally, as a sort of neat work around for iMPC's lack of Audiobus, I ran an output cable from my iPhone into an iRig Guitar interface, plugged that into the line/mic input jack on the Ipad and then selected that as the Audiobus input. Viola, instant iMPC Audiobus capability. It would be nice to be able to do that from within the Ipad, but who knows if Retronyms and Akai will get their act together. Retronyms needs to realize that Tabletop's instruments will never be able to compete with heavyweights such as Animoog, Magellan, Nave and now Thor!? Say what?

With audiopaste what apps do you guys use to do your main work using the Impc samples? I was looking at nanostudio.

Mostly Beatmaker 2. It's got a normal folder structure like Windows or OS X. Create/Delete/Rename etc. Having normal folders on iOS is why many like coolderb (what up homie !) go jailbreak+iFile.

But BM 2 on any device jailbreak or not, has the easy folder options. Also it's very easy to chop samples on it and save the chops in folders. Plug in iTunes and drag out the folders to use anywhere, MPC, DAW whatever. It's like a portable Propellerhead Recycle the chopping portion of the app, it's really good.

Nanostudio is excellent but it puts the keyboard/synth stuff first. And the keys/synths are excellent.

Beatmaker two puts the pads first with 8 banks available for 128 pads, it's very nice. But it's key instruments are not as good as Nanostudio.

If you can afford the $40 total, get both.
