Discuss Akai's iOS apps iMPC & iMPC Pro
By funkycoldmedina Sat Mar 23, 2013 12:36 am
I GOT THE FLY. AS WE ALL KNOW BY NOW, THE IMPC APP IS STRAIGHT CRAP FOR US SERIOUS MUSICIANS DUE TO IT'S LIMITED FUNCTIONALITY. BEATMAKER 2 IS THE ACTUAL "MPC" APP. HAS ANYONE FIGURED OUT HOW TO USE THE MPC FLY TO TRIGGER PADS IN BEATMAKER 2? I'VE TRIED ALL KINDS OF MIDI COMBINATIONS, BUT I CAN'T GET IT.

I KNOW IT'S POSSIBLE TO DO BECAUSE IT'S SUPPOSED TO BE COMPATIBLE WITH ANY APP THAT HAS CORE MIDI, AND BM2 HAS CORE MIDI. THIS APP AND THE FLY WOULD BE THE KILLER IPAD BEATMAKING COMBO... THANKS IN ADVANCE!

I don't have a Fly, but can you tell me if there is a way to map what MIDI notes are being sent by which pads/banks on the Fly?

If Beatmaker 2 is recognizing the Fly properly as a Core MIDI device it should show up in the MIDI preferences in Beatmaker 2.

Beatmaker 2's pads are MIDI Note numbers 0-127, in order, over 8 banks A-H.

I be interested to know as well, don't you have to set the midi notes of the pad to something ridiculous like c0 to get the pads working?.

It seems ridiculous as most mappings start on note #36, but if you consider that BM2 has 128 pads and there are only 128 MIDI note messages (0-127) it makes sense.

I looked at Akai.com and of course there is no manual. I just have to look at the spec sheet and photo and guess. (Yeah Akai that will make me want to buy one. :Sigh: )

There's no bank switches that I can tell and I know from Flux302's overview of it at NAMM it has no octave transpose. I hope this thing isn't just locked at only 16 notes able to be sent perhaps MIDI Note #'s 36-51.

funkycoldmedina, anything you can tell us about the device or if it included anything beyond the overview sheet on the website would be great.

I'm curious about this too. I justed did some digging on Intua's site. Came across these instructions for making BM work with the Akai Synthstation25 using MidiBridge. Maybe that will work with the Fly. I'll email Matt(from Intua) for more info.

I think the MIDI Bridge workaround was only necessary as some apps didn't work with the SS25 SDK.

I know the Akai MPCFly overview list say "virtually any Core MIDI app" but with no indication as to what apps might be the exception or why.

But again, no manual is ridiculous and these guessing games they're running are getting old quick.

They've got time to code a BS rhythm game but no time to write a manual for anticipated hardware accessory :hmmm:

THANKS FOR BEING ON IT, GUYS! UNFORTUNATELY, UNLIKE AN MPD, THERE ARE NO OPTIONS FOR MIDI ADJUSTMENTS ON THE ACTUAL FLY UNIT. EVERYTHING WITH MIDI WOULD HAVE TO BE CONFIGURED WITHIN BM2 OR ANOTHER APP, LIKE MIDIBRIDGE OR SOMETHING (WHICH I KNOW NOTHING ABOUT). INTERESTINGLY, THE MPC FLY IS RECOGNIZED ON THE MAIN MIDI PAGE WITHIN BM2. I JUST CAN'T GET IT TO TRIGGER ANYTHING, EVEN IF IT'S TURNED ON AND ACTIVE.

WITH THE FLY, WHAT YOU SEE IS WHAT YOU GET. THERE'S NOT THAT MUCH DEPTH TO THE UNIT. THE MANUAL IS ABOUT 2 PAGES OF INFO, ALL OF WHICH WE'VE KNOWN SINCE THE PRESS RELEASE IN EARLY 2012.

I'VE BEEN TOLD BY VARIOUS PEOPLE TO TRY MIDIBRIDGE OR THE frEwi APP IN ORDER TO SET THE ASSIGNMENTS/SENDS, BUT I HAVE NO CLUE WHAT I AM DOING WHEN I TRY THESE, EVEN AFTER SOME RESEARCH. I REALLY NEED AN EXPERT TO HELP WALK ME THROUGH THE PROCESS... I'LL CHECK THAT SYNTHSTATION TUTORIAL THOUGH AND SEE IF IT HELPS ME!

ANOTHER THING I SHOULD MENTION IS THAT IN BM2, I HAVE GOTTEN IT SET UP SO THAT THE PADS ON THE FLY LIGHT UP WHEN I TOUCH THEM. SO THAT'S A STEP IN THE RIGHT DIRECTION. THEY JUST AREN'T TRIGGERING ANY OF THE SOUNDS I HAVE LOADED.

ANY IDEAS ANYONE? THANKS.

Getting the pads to light up is progress! What happens when you press the on screen pads?

THE ONSCREEN PADS TRIGGER THE SOUNDS JUST FINE...NOW I HAVE BOTH BM2 AND THE FLY ICONS APPEARING IN MIDIBRIDGE. WHICH ONE IS "IN" AND WHICH ONE IS "OUT" FOR WHAT I'M GOING FOR? I'M TRYING DIFFERENT COMBOS BUT NOTHING WORKS SO FAR.

You'd think if BM2 is showing it as active in MIDI preferences that at least 16 of the 128 should respond.

If the Fly's pads are lighting up off touchscreen presses I would have to say it's because I think BM2 defaults to MIDI out being selected. So it's good to see some MIDI communication but that's as you know the opposite of what you want.

coolderb I feel like we are in some mystery solving club together since iMPC came out, along with Jazzydrew and now funkycoldmedina has joined us.

I'd have to look at some MIDI bridge screens. I only have the BM2 here and I use an Alesis dock and MPD or MPC. But I'll try to help any way I can.

Generally speaking I would think you want MPC Fly as the output and BM2 as input. Not sure on the MIDI clock send/receive switches in the BM2 preferences. The Fly having Note Repeat, I would guess it's like an MPD and it would have to send MIDI clock to BM2. So maybe set BM2 to MIDI clock receive and turn off send.

Lol, like a crazy Scooby Doo episode. I ordered a Fly, it should be here tomorrow so I can try some things too.

Might need to hope someone else who bought one can chime in. I can only offer so much as it all just guesswork with my basic knowledge of MIDI and iOS.

A MIDI monitor application would be good here. Run that with the Fly attached and press the pads and an app like that could tell you what MIDI Note #/Channel is being transmitted by each pad.

The one I'm looking at now is $4.99, I'm trying to find a free one. I'll post one if I find it.

Glad to here you're getting one coolderb, again I don't think I can offer much more here. I hope it's a smooth setup or whatever hurdle is going on here is figured out so both you guys can start enjoying the integrated setup.

And yeah I did almost write Scooby Doo. Akai beware of these meddling kids...

I submitted a request on the Intua Beatmaker forum and earlier today I saw the same request submitted on the Akai tech. support forum. We should have more info. soon.

I'm sure its just a matter of time and technically should work since it is being recognized as a midi device in Beatmaker.
