Hi all.

Newbie here, go easy :)

I have been producing for over 25 years and have obviously used Akai products in that time. I had a S01 in my home setup years ago... I recently bought a little MPD 218 to dip my toe in and then blindly bought stems on release day (I never read requirements or instructions)... Anyway I realised quickly that it couldn't be used as is with the MPD or the software that it comes with...

How do I get stems to work without having to invest too much more.

Many thanks for your time in advance

If you don't have an MPC then maybe accept you wasted $10 and instead use a free stem splitter like UVR https://ultimatevocalremover.com/ instead. In terms of stem separation results, there is currently nothing special about MPC Stems, you can't tweak the algorithm and it doesn't even work in standalone MPCs yet.

Plenty of options out there for stem separation, MPC Stems unique selling point is mostly the added convenience of it being integrated into the MPC Software (saving a couple of seconds compared to dragging WAVs over from a third party app). Plus it will carry over any slice markers that were present in the original sample, but they've not implemented any workflow optimisations to take advantage of this (e.g. option to export chopped stem separation programs) .
