Yes, exactly

If I remember correctly on the original MPC 60 there was a function that allowed you to audition the "key change" of a specific sequence or the whole song while listening live. Then when you were satisfied you simple hit enter and sequence/song was in that key.

I used this function all the time.

I know the Ren has something similar, but I assume you have to go through a treasure trove of unnecessary steps

Realtime swing like on the 4000! (ie change swing and timing offset while the sequence is playing and hear the changes in real time)

i absolutely live and die by this feature... lay the drum pattern with no quantize and then start to program the swing after wards to find just the right way i want the beat to sit..

this is how it was intended to be used..roger linn has stated this several times... it was not possible with the 60/3k which is why it included a llist of preset swing settings to try at certain tempos to get certain feels... but he has always stated that realtime swing adjustments were the goal...

he implemented this to perfection on the tempest and has stated this to be in his opinion its most significant feature

... i still have my 3k and 4k and it has become so difficult just trying to keep up with what features i'll loose vs gain by switching to the ren.. i had an mpc studio at version 1.4 but was unsatisfied... i may look to give the 1.7 ren a try..

side point:
have there been any adjustments to the ren sound engine? producers such as Danja and Sean C & LV who switched from the 4k to the Ren have had an absolutely terrible degradation in sound quality... id like to think its because they are using the same processing chains that applied to the 4k and havent switched them up to match the ren sound.. but still im cautious...

in contrast the new Freemasons album Shakedown 3 is all ren drums and sounds GREAT!

Me as well.

Just mimic all the features from 4000 to the mpc software, but easier said than done. I think we need better legacy file support.

The 4000 sounds immaculate. It's just the epitome of a professional sampler/workstation.

Now, The Ren. I think those producers "degradation" of sound might be attributed to its analog to digital conversion. When I sample through my DIGI 003 my Ren beats sound Closer to my 4000. The one time I sampled through the Ren the sample sounded closer to what it would sound like on my 2500, but a little grittier. I don't know if one beat is a good enough sample size, but that's my experience on it so far. I love the vintage mode. The SP and MPC 60 modes adds decent color to the beats.

I wasn't too fond of the Studio. The workflow and cramped layout of the buttons didnt suit me. The Ren however I can make beats on that thing all day. It's a real comfortable machine or controller.

Yeah. If they give us a sine wave along with the MPC 4000's modulation matrix so we could create our own instruments from scratch combined with the ability to create our own expansion packs that'll be tight.

Or it could be some other factor such as a different engineer or maybe them having access to VSTs within the Ren causing them to over process.
Might be as you said they need to adjust the processing but you would think they would be after a defined sound quality?

YES!!! I put in a request for this exact thing at the Akai site over a year ago. Sandeen (??) said it was forwarded, but it probably went into the abyss. I never had a 4000, but this feature was something I used a lot on my MV (I think it was called' length lock' on the MV... great feature for sweeping samples and finding/changing the rhythm of a sample of a fixed length.

Yes this is something I'd really like even if they just implemented keyboard shortcuts to put the Seq, Track and Program field in edit mode so you could type in a new name w/o using the mouse would work for me (best of both worlds). I did a video on how to do that a few months back with a few small free third party utilities for Win7 and OS X and it works great and I rename seq, tracks and programs pretty fast, but it would be better if it were built in with just basic keyboard shortcuts to put the fields in edit mode and have the field highlighted on the hardware for visual feedback....

I have requested this feature of realtime swing as well. I hoped for it to be in the v1.7. It didn't, hopefully this well requested feature get implemented in v1.8 soon.



Ps. While browsing I stumbled upon this here. Never new it akSys software existed on the 4K. Do you have any experience with it, if so can you elaborate on it a bit.
