Installing MPC expansions on external hard drive

Hello All I'm trying to figure out how I can use my MPC expansions in my MPC software but install it on my external hard to save space on my C drive. Is this possible?

Yes. Your library can be saved anywhere. You use the file browser to select and favorite your folder. The browser is found by clicking the icon at the bottom right (or pressing F).

How can this be done if the installer does not give you the option to load your sample library on an alternate disk drive? It always defaults to the “C:” drive.

Press F to open the File Browser.
Click dropdown menu near top.
External HDD appears at the bottom of the list. If it doesn't, open Windows Explorer or Finder and identify your drive letter. Then you can click on the file path (e.g. C:\Users\) and delete it and type the drive letter you need, like "D:\" and press enter. It loads the files. Then you favorite this top folder by holding Shift and clicking on one of the five folders at the top.

This only lets me change the directory within the software. Basically, Im telling the MPC software WHERE the content is.

How do we actually install the content on a different drive. That is the issue.

Trying to save space on C drive.

I had the same need - ended up using Symbolic Link(s) in Windows 10 to "trick" MPC expansions to install on high-speed external drive and to have MPC software see the same as being in a folder on C:.

Do a search on Symbolic Links for Windows 10, and you should be good to go.

Apart from using the aforementioned Symbolic Links, is there an 'official' Akai way to relocate content on a drive other than the default System drive, hopefully using the MPC app to control this?

It seems utterly ridiculous that the content is hard-coded to a single location. What is this, the 1970's - these aren't IBM S/360's or DEC Vax's!!!?

No. For the moment just use symbolic links and send a feature request direct to Akai.

DEC VAX!!! I worked for years as a computer operator on these systems. Then they became dinosaurs. Digital Command Language. Did this bring back memories. I wonder how many people are aware of these computers.

I think I have figured this out.

If you open the inMusic Software Center, click on your profile icon at the top-right, click settings then set the "Download Folder" to where you have moved the content to.

All new expansions, instruments, whatever will then be downloaded to this folder.

That’s just the temporary download location for the installer. They’ll still be installed to the c drive

Do you know where they go on the main drive?

You used to be able to Junction (Hard Link) the Content Location to an external drive (or any other drive in your desktop), but after MPC 2.9 this stopped working adn the MPC Software would jsut freeze on load in the background (process would be there, but it would never actually launch the application). Once you moved the content back to the system drive, it would launch as normal.

Not sure if they fixed this in MPC 3.x, but I have never been able to get this to work after 2.10 was released.

Can anyone confirm if this has been fixed (particularly on Windows OS).

It's actually a pretty big reason why I ended up switching to Maschine. They handle content installation and relocation a lot better, which worked a lot better with the machine that I had back then.

As long as I could junction the content location it wasn't an issue... but they broke something and didn't bother to go back and fix it. Wondering if 3.x fixed it. Don't really want to redownload/install a bunch of stuff to check myself. I just did a PC cleanup a couple of weeks ago.

No it still freezes, if it does work it won’t last long before it freezes again , it can’t handle symbolic links.
Just favourite your expansions folder . It’s in c:/program data / akai
