MP3 Sample Quality and the Effect on Overall Production

My MP3 Sample only has a couple notes per bar and Im noticing a slight hissss sound due to the low quality MP3 from YouTube. What effect will the slight Hissss sound have on the overall production as I start adding tracks. Will it have a negative impact on the overall production. Thanks for the education guys.

Personally I would only use an MP3 as a last resort and even then for say for a voice or foley sample, and try not to use them. Not saying you cant or anything and not stopping anyone or telling anyone they shouldn't, just I would not unless I really have to. If it was a song or something I would try buying it online or try find CD or record.

So the noise floor and the artefacts are present with your sample but you can mitigate that with a noise gate and filters, depending. Noise mostly, artefacts less so this is more for the noise. Also as you add other tracks over it you will mask it a bit and it wont be as obvious. But it is still there right so yeah with your case I would either chop it so you remove all the silence and keep just the notes, or gate it to get the same kind of result here. Then only the notes will have the noise or artefacts. Now it is way harder to notice. But again it might still be there but not as much.
Depending how bad it is is means it is your call here. processing it more and that will help but can also be a no win situation if it is really bad. Also this brings us to how it is levels wise, monitoring and your final arrangement and mix. Say it seems fine, but as soon as you play it really loud over FOH or nice big monitors then it might really be obvious or not. Again you have to make that call and use your ears here. If the sample is really bad and you used it as a loud part then it is more noticeable, but if it is only a small part not prominent in the mix then you wont notice it as much. If it is there it is always there, but you can get good results too. All depends.

I mean, MP3 is a lossy format as it is, and often content uploaded to YouTube (especially older stuff) is of questionable quality. So the short answer is: YES. It will affect the overall production quality of your work. The question is: what kind of sound are you going for? Sometimes a low quality audio recording is desired. Sometimes, not so much. YMMV. But I agree with bliprock - personally I would use MP3 as a last resort, and certainly not for a sample or stem that would be featured front and center. I absolutely hate that grating digital artifact sound of low quality MP3's.
